Although it recently came under new ownership and changed its name from the Layton Avenue Porterhouse Restaurant to J Roberts Porterhouse, the steakhouse at 800 W. Layton Ave. has been closed since the start of the new year.
Former owners Jerry and Marie Arenas sold the business in 2008 after 15 years of ownership. They still own and operate Palmer's Restaurant at 122 E. Capitol Dr. in downtown Hartland.
OnMilwaukee.com Food Writer Amy Schubert wrote about J Roberts Porterhouse in December 2008, discussing the value in its six-course selections dominated by steaks, chops and seafood.

j.roberts started with an expensive & pointless remodeling that didn't really improve the place. Then inexplicably refused to rebook longtime acts that drew well. She then went on to offend long time core customers with stupid kindergarten teacher behavior towards them. Some examples:She stopped long time regular, popular customer"nutman" from bringing in nuts, which he had done for years. She told spectacular, popular stunt dancer couple Mike&Debbi, who had provided free entertainment there for years, not to perform their dancing there anymore. She told popular entertainer C.Travis the small b-day cake he brought in was not allowed. She told famous singer Thunder she couldn't sing with the band, though they wanted her to.The staff freaquently complained about they way things were run & dining room business went way down.I hope Jerry & Marie reopen it,because it was a Great Place before j.roberts took over & ran it to the ground.

I don't know what the internal issues were going on there. Since the sale, they didn't seem to have a business plan or ideas about menu changes. Poor response to the existing base of loyal diners. No wonder they tanked.
