Milwaukee's best Thai restaurant, 2008: The King and I

The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.

October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!

For the second year in a row, OnMilwaukee.com readers decidedly voted The King and I the favorite Milwaukee Thai restaurant. Blowing out the competition,The King and I received over a third of the vote and as the oldest Thai restaurant in the city, it's easy to say their age old recipes aren't going anywhere.

Capitalizing on years of shopping in open markets and cooking alongside their Thai mothers, owners Bob and Marie Phoungphol prepare authentic Thai cuisine just as they learned decades ago. Eager to share their Thai heritage and its culinary distinction, the Phoungphol's opened The King and I over twenty years ago.

Offering over 65 items on the menu, The King and I proudly declares the Volcano Chicken a signature dish; lightly breaded chicken smothered in "volcano sauce." A Thai tradition, the King and I's volcano sauce combines sweet, sour and just the right amount of heat.

OnMilwaukee.com editor's choice: Mai Thai

2. Singha Thai
3. EE Sane Thai Cuisine
4. Thai Kitchen
5. Thai Palace

Sorry, I disagree. The best Thai restaurant is Bangkok House in St. Francis. The menu is very diverse. The curries are excellent. The Yum Woon Sen appetizer is truly a must for noodle lovers. In a head to head taste off Bangkok House will win. So come to St. Francis for really good Thai food. You won't regret it.

Love that volcano chicken! A traditional tripe and sticky rice combo really develops appreciation for this trendy cuisine.
