Crabbing at Las Palmas


I love seafood.

It's actually a well-known story in our family that my mother craved seafood when she was pregnant with me and my dad took her out every Friday night for nine months for shrimp scampi.

This was a huge splurge for them at the time, especially since the only place in Wisconsin Rapids that had seafood in the 1970s was what is now the restaurant at the Hotel Mead, one of the ritziest establishments in that small city.

So, I guess it is no surprise that I have a weakness for all things seafood, especially the shrimp scampi at The Savoy Room, 1962 N. Prospect Ave.

But there is a lot to be said for just plain and simple seafood; peel and eat shrimp by the pound, raw oysters by the dozen, and oh yes, all-you-can-eat crab legs.

Scott and I ventured out to Las Palmas in West Allis, 1901 S 60th St., on the recommendation of a friend who said they had "the best crab legs in town." We were a little skeptical, firstly because Las Palmas is a Mexican Restaurant, and secondly, because when we pulled up, the place did not look very inviting -- we almost didn't go in.

But after stuffing ourselves silly on rich crab meat, I knew I had found one of my new favorite neighborhood restaurants. For $22.95 per person you get a huge Corona bucket of some of the freshest, most perfectly steamed crab legs you will find anywhere, and if you can finish that off, the staff here will keep bringing you more buckets until you are sated (Scott and I barely polished off one bucket together).

One of the novelties about all-u-can eat crab legs is that you have to work for your dinner, and while it is messy, it is usually fun (and sometimes frustrating) to crack the shells and pull out the sweet crabmeat within. At Las Palmas, the crab was so exceptionally steamed that a single crack will pull out the crabmeat in one piece, in one fell swoop.

And it is delicious. Even the top of the legs, where the legs conjoin to the crab's body, were sweet and tasty, and not at all fishy, which is the downfall often at restaurants that offer all-you-can-eat crab. The crab was so good, we hardly used the melted butter that accompanied it.

Las Palmas offers all-you-can-eat crab legs Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays for $22.95, and your order includes a side of rice and beans. Come hungry, and wearing clothes that won't suffer a few butter splatters. It is well worth it.

So I took my boyfriend out to eat for Fathers day at Las Palmas, when we got there we were greeted very friendly but our waiter was rude. I had ordered off the menu and it was okay but I didnt finish it so I packed it home but my BF got the ALL YOU CAN EAT. I gotta tell you its freakin EXPENSIVE if i knew that we wouldnt even eat there. It was 27 dollars just for those crab legs and some were over cooked. You couldnt even share the food, alot of people who do go to restaurants do share there food esp. couples, that they losing business in that even though they are taxing for the legs. The WORST thing about eating there is that they charge you 15% gratuity on every table even if you are under the party of 6. We were bill 7 dollars for gratuity, I couldnt believe that only us two were billed for that much. I had better food and services for under 50 dollars. Let me tell you I have eaten at really good places and have known to cook really good food for all kinds of people but for this much. Im not even cheap and work two jobs and Im complaining about 15% gratuity. I wouldnt even tip 7 dollars for two ppl at a table exp. with bad services. Oh and when I wanted to pack my food to go they rushed to give us the bill when my bf wasnt even finish with his ALL YOU CAN EAT CRAB LEGS, he still wanted another bucket. The place was busy with ppl but the ppl that was there before was still eating their food but we were rushed from the waiter to leave. By the time we finished our food no one else was really there but the ones who were there before us. WTH kind of services was that and plus my 7 dollars 15% gratuity too... I would never go there again and never refer that place to anyone and tell everybody how they charge so much for not even being up scale. FYI if someone that knows these ppl or work there tell your owner who suppose to be under new management to take that 15% gratuity off every table even if its under 6 ppl at a table. Las Palmas is not even upscale nor in a RICH neighborhood to even tax that much. Thank you but never will i return again to that place. You guys just losted alot of business by me even writing a review and if any one of you guys who do read this and feel the need to write me back please do so. I would glady go in details on to why you SHOULDN'T go there

The owner of Las Palmas passed away and the service and quality have gone downhill, if you go be careful.

Los Palmas is great. I admit the first time that I went, I was skeptical as well. But you don't even need the margarine or the sides that come with the all you can eat, sweet, sweet crab legs!!!!

While the crab legs are excellent at Las Palmas, the last time I was there, the "butter" was margarine. Just not the same as they used to be. When we first started going there, they were $14.95 which was an awesome deal but now, they are on the top end of "all you can eat crab legs" and they serve them with margarine. Very disappointing. Club Paragon serves 'em up just as well and with butter, if you don't mind the slower service.

Oh the memories of all the fantastic Scampi at the Mead!! However, the Scampi at the Savoy is fantastic and I would definitely go back again. But now my taste buds are getting ready for those Crab Legs the next time I'm in Milwaukee for a visit.
