The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
There must be some reason that, year after year, Oakland Gyros, 2867 N. Oakland Ave., takes the prize for OnMilwaukee.com readers' favorite Late Night Drunk Eats.
Maybe it's the location, on the East Side close to UWM. Maybe it's because Greek food can be salty and delicious after a long night of libation. Maybe, it's because Oakland Gyros takes on a slightly bawdy atmosphere around bar time.
Maybe it's a little bit of everything.
The fact that the food is fast, plentiful, satisfying and relatively inexpensive explains why so many pedestrians in the area smell of tzatziki sauce in the pre-dawn hours.
That sauce, often referred to as "cucumber" or "yogurt" sauce, when combined with sliced lamb / beef, the warm pita and fresh onions, that keep fans coming back.
Next time you stop at Oakland Gyros to top off an evening, feel free to engage fellow patrons in a debate about the pronunciation of the featured sandwich.
In the Midwest and West, it is usually pronounced "YEE-roh." On the East Coast, many say "JAI-ROH." Others here say "GEAR-OH." Don't ask the staff. They are busy serving the customers, many of whom were overserved at their previous stop.
An East Side tradition, Oakland Gyros is the No. 1 late-night spot for OnMilwaukee.com readers.

This is one of the better rankings. Personally, I would have gone with Pizza Shuttle as No. 1, but making No. 3 is livable. If the Eastside George Webb's locations didn't have some of the slowest service at bar time, I might consider that as No. 1. A gyro after bar time seems way too heavy to me. A burger and some fries or a piece of pizza seems like a better route.

1. Real Chili - nothing hits the spot like a bowl of the MU special 2. Dogg Haus - the chili cheese dogs are great 3. Pizza Shuttle - who doesn't love pizza? I just don't crave gyros late night and Webb's is slow.
