'Shawerma' is Arabic transliteration/spelling of the Turkish word chevirme (to turn, revolve etc). The meat hangs around a metal blade-like stick and as it turns it gets cooked. Turks and millions of people around the world call it DONER. In Germany doner is the number one fast food item surpassing McDonalds, Burger King, Wurst combined. Maybe because it was Greek immigrants who brought this Turkish food here, the name 'gyro' stuck in the US.Baklava is also Turkish in origin as yogurt, cacik (tzatziki), borek, dolma etc. I have not eaten their food yet but I am sure it will be delicious. They seem to have many Arabic food also.I will try when I go to that part of the town.

Wikipedia isn't an actual authority on much, including spelling. Lots of other sites use the same spelling as this new restaurant. You can find recipes, other restaurants, blogs, etc. all using the "Shawerma" spelling.

I always heard that the reason for the variation in the English spelling of words from the Arabic and, in this case, the Turkish, like words from Russian and Chinese, is due to the fact that they're being translated from languages with different alphabets. The Turkish alphabet is similar to English, but not the same and anyway the word probably derives from Arabic anyway, so, I'm not sure there's an officially correct version of "shawarma" or "shwarma" or "shawerma."

The correct spelling, as stated by wikipedia is Shawarma. It's a weird spelling, but then again many word in this language have weird spellings. I love gyros, and they are the Greek version of the 'shwarm-uh.' I love gyros, and am curious to see what the original tastes like. I work in the area, and Pizza Shuttle dominates the food in the area, as does Chopsticks, wich is maybe 3 years old. But there has been a Taco City, and a Mr. Goodcents in that area too that failed. Hopefully this store is run well enough, with palatable food that it can co-exist among the many other eateries around the area.
