In case you haven’t heard – or indulged – yet, today is National Donut Day, a holiday that we at OnMilwaukee celebrated by visiting Joey Carioti at Cranky Al’s, 6901 W. North Ave., in Wauwatosa.

I also received some interesting stats this morning from the "Donut Index," conducted by data scientists at NationalToday.com and the folks at the universal delivery app Postmates.

Although 96 percent of Americans are "nuts for doughnuts," apparently just over half (51 percent) think more highly of people who bring doughnuts to the office.

And the other 49 percent?

Two percent of Americans actually don’t like people who bring doughnuts to the office and a whopping 47 percent claim – claim!!! – that they don’t care either way. Puh-leez.

Surely, among that 47 percent are the 44 percent of Americans who say they’ve never done their officely duty and brought in doughnuts to share.

For the record, 3 percent of us say we don’t like doughnuts and another one percent actually hate them. Cover your ears, Homer. It’ll be OK.

Carioti says the cruller – which celebrity chef Alton Brown has praised at Cranky Al’s, noting the glorious deep-fried beauties as some of the top doughnuts in the country – is the most popular among Cranky Al’s patrons, who it should be noted began lining up this morning before the shop opened at 6 a.m.

However, according to the "Donut Index," these are America’s top five donuts:

  1. Glazed (28%)
  2. Boston cream (17%)
  3. Chocolate frosted (16%)
  4. Jelly filled (11%)
  5. Chocolate cake (7%)

Half of you, plus one, might be interested to know that Postmates is giving away free doughnuts to 5,000 offices in Milwaukee today. Click here, add a dozen doughnuts to your cart from your favorite local doughnut shop and use the code DONUTFAIRY to get them free.
