OnMilwaukee.com has learned that Sobelman's Eastside Grill, 1952 N. Farwell Ave., has closed.

A recorded message at the number informs callers that the company's locations near Marquette – 1601 W. Wells St. and 1901 W. St. Paul Ave. – are still open.

Owner Dave Sobelman told OnMilwaukee.com that the Eastside Grill "had never been profitable" and was just not in keeping with the Sobelman brand.

He expressed deep regret over the abrupt closing, saying that he had planned to keep the Eastside Grill open at least through the weekend and most likely through the end of the month. But on Saturday, June 8 the grill in the kitchen broke, and the decision was made that fixing it wouldn't be worth the trouble and cost.

"I almost feel like I betrayed them (the customers) but that was not our intent," he said. "I really thought we'd be open two more weeks."

He said that a corn beef restaurant would likely open in the space in September.

"I just can't believe how busy our other two locations are," he said. "I'm just going to concentrate on what's working for me."
