51. Looking into the new Divino Wine & Dine
Walking in to the new Divino - formerly Palermo Villa - as I did last weekend for the first time since it reopened in late December, I was pleased to see both that the place looked familiar, but also new. The layout is the same, but the decor has been completely re-done.
52. Why don't I eat here more often?
I like, and write about, a lot of Mexican eateries in Milwaukee, but I had temporarily forgotten about this one. After a great meal, it's back on my radar.
53. Cool culinary classes for kids
Chef Paul Smitala's 90-minute cooking classes, held in the banquet room at Blackwolf Run Restaurant in Kohler, where Smitala runs the kitchen, teaches kids kitchen basics and, despite the fact that the students range in age from 6 to 9 years old, Smitala doesn't have them cutting corners.
54. Glass Nickel Pizza Co. to open on North Avenue
The Glass Nickel Pizza Co. is opening a new location at 1504 E. North Ave., company co-founder Tim Nicholson confirmed to OnMilwaukee.com yesterday.
55. This Milwaukee coffee made Zagat's "United States of Caffeine"
Milwaukee brews some great coffee, and on Zagat's new list called "The United States of Caffeine 50 States, 50 Must-Try Coffee Shops," one local roaster makes the grade. Read on.
56. In search of the perfect pizza: Big Ebe's
In 1978 Frank Ebert, aka "Big Ebe," grew tired of the construction business and decided to get into the restaurant business. He opened Big Ebe's Pizza, 9125 W. Lincoln Ave., and 35 years later, business is still going strong. I stopped in to try a few pizzas on a busy weekend.
57. First look: Mr. Webo's Mexican Food & Drink
The space on the southwest corner of Lincoln and Howell Avenues is destined to be a Mexican restaurant. Now that Guanajuato moved down the street to new digs, the latest Latin eatery to fill the space is Mr. Webo's, which opened last week.
58. In search of the perfect pizza: Maria's Pizza
Maria's Pizza has been a Milwaukee staple since 1957, but this was my first visit here. The homey pizzeria is family owned and operated, and I was excited to put their legendary pizza to the test.
59. Two Milwaukee chefs are James Beard semifinalists
Semifinalists for this year's James Beard Awards were chosen from 44,000 online nominations, and Wisconsin area restaurants and chefs were nominated in two categories including Best Chef in the Midwest and Outstanding Bar Program.
60. In search of the perfect pizza: Le Cakery Cafe & Pizzeria
Le Cakery? That sounds like the name of a bakery. Well, it is, but it's also a café with a unique menu.
61. Il Mito East to open Monday
Il Mito East will open Feb. 18 in the Knickerbocker Hotel.
62. Ristorante Bartolotta named in national Best Italian Restaurant list
Ristorante Bartolotta, 7616 W. State St., was named in The Business Insider's pick for Milwaukee in its Best Italian Restaurants in 25 Big Cities Around the U.S.
63. Rapid Review: Smoke Shack
I'm almost embarrassed to admit that until this week, I hadn't paid a visit to the not-so-new Smoke Shack, 332 N. Milwaukee St. It's been on my list, along with a zillion other places, and finally I can check it off with a juicy, delicious checkmark. It's never a bad idea to have lunch with the owner, and Joe Sorge made sure I left Smoke Shack in a food coma. We went nuts with the Kansas City eggrolls ($8.25), brisket sloppy joe sliders ($10.75), the brisket "sammich" with kettle chips ($13.50), sweet potato fries ($3.50) and corn bread ($1.75).
64. Honors for Chef Johnson
OnMilwaukee.com contributor Chef Justin Johnson has been nominated for a National Restaurant Association Award, and has been invited to participate in the Culinary Institute of America's Masters program.
65. OpenTable: Milwaukee's the 12th most romantic city in America
Remember Milwaukee's "sexy" moniker from Marie Claire in 2008? Today's mention is similar as Milwaukee shows up on OpenTable's list of the "Top 25 Most Romantic Cities in the United States."
66. Openings: Fink's and Big Daddy's Brew & `Que
The East Side gets a new bar, and iPic gets a barbeque joint.
67. Customized, Neapolitan-style pizza chain coming to Milwaukee
Blaze Fast-Fire'd Pizza, a fast-casual build-your-own pizza concept, today announced that Walch Hospitality Group, LLC, has signed an agreement to develop six franchise stores in Milwaukee and Madison.
68. In search of the perfect pizza: Tanino's
The story of how Tanino's came to be is a great example of why I write these blogs. Frank Laffranchini immigrated to New York from Italy in 1973. Now he's the owner of his own Milwaukee pizzeria.
69. First Look: Simple Cafe
Simple Cafe opened last week on Milwaukee's East Side.
70. Where would you open a restaurant in greater Milwaukee?
It's all about location, right? For restaurants, though, isn't it about the food? Does location matter? Should restaurants cluster? Not sure? Here's what a few experts said. Dive in, and then chime in with your thoughts.
71. Marketbar coming to Third Ward
Marketbar will open in the Third Ward this summer - potentially as early as June of 2013.
72. In search of the perfect pizza: Schneider's
Schneider's intrigued me with its low prices and thick, spicy pizza sauce. But I had to remember: you get what you pay for.
73. In search of the perfect pizza: Trattoria di Carlo
With a little help from his family, first-generation Sicilian-American Carlo Pedone opened Trattoria di Carlo on Howell Avenue 10 years ago. I stopped by to check out the Barbecue Chicken Pizza.
74. Chef makes avante-garde food accessible at c. 1880
Chef Thomas Hauck's dishes at c.1880 are bright, offbeat, purposefully plated and intelligently crafted. He has soundly developed both sides of his chef brain. It is, after all, important to be both an artist and a technician. c.1880's early success is the result of Chef Hauck honing both of these skills to a fine edge.
75. Tossing peanut shells on floors remains good, clean fun
This week, I took my kids to AJ Bombers for the first time and they were absolutely enthralled by the free peanuts and how it was customary to toss the shells on the floor. This experience reminded me of being a kid and going to the Ground Round on Port Washington Road.
