Tonight's premiere of NBC's "Community" offers one of the best chances for new laughs this fall.
The "Community" of the title is a community college. Despite the usually convoluted sitcom sit that delivers us to the campus of Greendale Community College, the show offers a bounty of characters, including a delightfully annoying Chevy Chase, who finally seems comfortable in a second banana role, and one of the stars of cable TV, Joel McHale, the smarty-pants host of "The Soup" on E! in an equally smarty-pants role as a lawyer who lacks a legitimate undergrad degree.
The show is the creation of Milwaukee ComedySportz veteran Dan Harmon, and Marquette alum Danny Pudi is in the cast.
The pilot spends much of its time introducing us to the cast. But based on this first half-hour, it's worth getting to know them.
"Community" debuts at 8:31 tonight -- yes, 8:31 -- on Channel 4 in Milwaukee, after the 8 p.m. season debut of "The Office."

I went to MU with Pudi and he was very annoying. He once asked me to smell his laundry, dump beer on his head (he didn't drink I guess) and tried to be like Chris Farley ALL the time. Also, how can you have a show with the lead actor being the guy from the Burger King office commericals? What's next...the Sham Wow guy getting a talk show? Chevy Chase hasn't been funny since the 70's.

Considering the mindless drivel that has begun to dominate TV programming - the oxymoronic reality TV genre, in particular - "Community" was a fun and clever show with an ensemble that - refreshingly - may appeal to a larger audience. It was simply a nice introductory episode, and I look forward to seeing how it develops. And allow me to defend "Spies Like Us." It was corny, silly, and unrealistic, but it was a classic.

Not bad, but nothing special yet. I'm a big fan of Dan Harmon though so I'll give it a few more tries.

I turned off Community about 15 minutes in. Chevy Chase ceased to be funny a long time ago, I think it was Spies Like Us that did him in.

Ho hum. Hope it gets better. The Office sucks, too.
