I don't want this to be my nightstand during Thanksgiving. |

Several times this year, I felt a cold or some other bug coming on.
But whenever a hint of the sniffles, scratch throat or any of the other annoying symptoms that usually signify the onset of several days of doom started to show, I loaded up on Vitamin C, clear liquids and plenty of rest.
Each time, I felt better in about a day and silently laughed at Mother Nature.
Today, though, I think the old lady finally got me.
The stuffy nose started Friday, the throat got sore over the weekend and today, the sneezing started. Ugh, it was time for a late-night trip to the drug store for Vitamin C supplements, apple juice and saltines.
Of all the times of the year to get sick, I think Thanksgiving has to be the worst. Personally, I wouldn't mind being home sick for Christmas and I probably would stand to benefit from a New Year's not spent out on the town.
But Thanksgiving? That was supposed to be my last culinary hurrah before settling into my new workout regime. Turkey. Turkey sandwhiches. Turkey casserole. Turkey soup ... what fun is gorging on some tasty bird if you can't smell or taste it?
I'm going to drink another glass of Emergen-C, and whip up some chicken soup before dusting off the warm mist humidifer and popping some NyQuil with the hopes of pulling out one las come-from-behind victory against the body.
In the meantime, feel free to share your tried and true home remedies with a Talkback below.

Okay, Dr. Wagner you know there is another site called WebMD for stuff like this. Obviously you feel obligated to write about Turkey and what not but please spare us this self indulgent crap. A great thing about online communication and almost all written communication is that it CAN BE immune to the virus of self pity and the annoyance of having somebody whining and runny nosed sneezing and coughing sick around you. You should be able to seperate some of this crap from your writing unless you think your audience is amateur nurses and lonely mothers and grandmothers that miss babying their own. Was this the only idea for an article you had other than something about TRYPTOPHAN... please stop retreading...

By an authority of no less than the University of Wisconsin, Vitamin C and Zinc have shown to shorten the course of a cold by 2-4 days, so you are on the right track. Add the Zinc (Zinc gluconate, 50mg, 3 or 4 times/day).
