The crack in Hoan Bridge was bigger than crack in Liberty Bell. |

With the Brewers taking on the Phillies in the first round of the National League Championship Series this week in Philadelphia (and then Milwaukee), we thought it was a good time to dust off and update a list we created back in 2001 when the Bucks battled the 76ers in the NBA playoffs.
Enjoy again some good natured-ribbing (because at least two of our staffers are big fans of the City of Brotherly Love) at the expense of our new East Coast rivals.

Are you kidding me with this lame list? If it wasn't for Philadelphia there wouldn't be a Milwaukee! This is the cradle of liberty! Your own Packers won't even play there, so what does that say about about your two-horse town? Unbelievable! I spent a week in Milwaukee one day! Honestly can you guys try to do a better list? Hey was the Declaration of Independence ratified in this little town? Was the US Constitution? You guys are mired in the past with your Violent Femmes and Happy Days. Anytime any one of you nitwits want to discuss something real just post it here on your itty-bitty website. Anytime, anywhere cheeseheads.

Tastycakes beat Frozen Custard always---and Betsy Ross has really stood the "test of time."

Philly's market is much better than Milwaukee's. The Philly one is a mix of lunch options and real market stalls. Sadly the Milwaukee one is mostly a lunch spot with a small smattering of market-y stalls.

Miller vs. Yuengling isn't really an appropriate matchup. Leinenkugel vs. Yuengling: now that's a contest. As a Philly expat, I um, "grew up" drinking Y Lager, but I do love Leinie's these days. However, to be accurate, neither city is the home of either of those beers. We just drink a lot of them. Truth be told, I see more similarities than differences between MKE and PHL. The biggest differences are probably people (MKE folks are far friendlier); cost of living (MKE wins again); major professional sports (PHL); transportation (PHL--knock SEPTA all you want, but there are lots of trains, and trains are awesome; just ask my son); and history (give the edge to PHL for the whol founding fathers angle). Now, some similarities: 1.) Proximity, and related inferiority complexes, to world-class cities. 2.) Largest major metropolitan areas in otherwise very rural states. 3.) Heavy on German and Italian heritage. 4.) Historical city halls undgergoing major renovations. 5.) Efforts to put new ballparks downtown that ultimately ended up on the far outskirts of the cities. 6.) Places and bodies of water with hard-to-pronounce tribal names. 7.) Long losing traditions among major pro sports teams. 8.) Hugely underrated and overstereotyped.
