Almonds, new Mexican food and a movie that's so bad it's good. It's just the kind of combination that can only be found in our weekly OnMilwaukee.com Recommends.
Taco Loco inside El Rey – There's a new cafe in the El Rey at 5200 W. Oklahoma Ave. The grocery store opened last October, but the sit-down or carry-out cafe opened last week and has a very different feel from the popular Latin dining spot in the Chavez Drive location. This one is larger and brighter, with an entire wall of windows. The menu offers breakfast items like huevos rancheros and chilquiles from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nothing costs more than $6.99 and the items can be purchased a la carte or as meals with rice and beans. I recommend the fresh and crunchy tostadas. – Molly Snyder
Marcona almonds – If you are a nut nut have I got a tip for you. It's Marcona almonds, available from Whole Foods. Marcona are known as the "Queen of Almonds" and are imported from Spain. They are rounder, softer and sweeter than the almonds that are grown in this country. The almonds are roasted in olive oil and then sprinkled with sea salt. They also don't have that brown skin that is associated with almonds. They are a little pricey but not absurd, and they are a treat not to be missed. – Dave Begel
"The Room" at The Oriental – It's quite possibly the worst movie ever made, and it's returning to the Oriental Theatre in a blaze of glory and awkward sex scenes tonight. "The Room" has amassed its very own "Rocky Horror"-style cult following since its 2003 release, and it's already infamous for its snarky crowd participation and flying cutlery. Tonight's midnight screening is the second of two (the first of which took place Friday night) and will offer not only the movie itself, but appearances by writer/director/actor/producer/weirdo Tommy Wiseau and actor Greg Sestero. If you haven't been to a showing of "The Room" in the past, I highly suggest you invest in some plastic spoons and experience it for yourself. – Renee Lorenz
