Milwaukee Art Museum soups up for Hunger Task Force

Last year, Milwaukee Art Museum brought soup to the city with "Andy Warhol: The Last Decade." This year, they're asking you to return the favor.

As part of their "Soup for Soup" Food Drive, MAM is asking all of its visitors to bring along a non-perishable food item (no, it doesn't just have to be soup) for donation to the Hunger Task Force.

In exchange, the museum will give each person that donates a voucher for a free cup of soup at Cafe Calatrava.

Visitors can trade in their donations at the museum admission desks through Nov. 14.

SHARP's bee-utiful quilts

The latest SHARP Literacy We Love to Learn book, entitled, "A Busy Bee: The Story of Bella the Honey Bee," landed the students` artwork in the Milwaukee Art Museum. Students from 13 schools joined forces to create 500 images depicting scenes from the book, which were then appliqued to four quilts now on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Lakefront Festival of Art

"Art Goes to the Movies"

The exhibit is designed for children ages 3-12, and they will love seeing their favorite characters from animated movies and participating in the hands-on activities. But older visitors will appreciate learning about the intense research that goes into constructing animated worlds and the art and history that inspires the creative process. The exhibit runs through Aug. 31 and is definitely not to be missed.

It may seem counter-intuitive to bring a two-year-old to the Art Museum, but that`s exactly what I did last Saturday. I feared we may be shushed out of the place or accidentally break something important. But surprisingly, it turned out to be a mostly stress-free morning full of discovery and hands-on fun. There was so much to do for children that we could hardly fit it all in before naptime.

New tickets and stickers

When folks would leave the museum, often they`d slap their sticker onto one of a couple light posts along Lincoln Memorial Drive, near the northerly entrance to Art Museum Drive. The poles have, consequently, been practically wallpapered with stickers from ground level up to a level just out of arm`s reach for humans of average height. But now that tradition may begin to diminish as quickly as the blue decoration on the old stickers has faded in the sun.
