Two are cool, but are three? |

All the talk of the new Obama family dog has me thinking about pets. They are a fun, fulfilling and important part of so many people's lives and I know I wouldn't feel complete without my fuzzy feline companions.
But is there too much of a good thing?
I have two cats and one fish (OK, Frank's not really a fish so much as he's blobby brown scum sucker who cleans my otherwise lifeless tank) and to me, this is plenty. But just today a friend sent me a video of an adorable white and orange kitten he and his wife are fostering.
He asked if I wanted another cat, taunting me with the painfully adorable kitten footage.
Now, I'm sure I could handle another cuddly creature if I had to, but is three just too much? Does it straddle the line between animal lover and crazy cat lady?
I think it might. I think the third cat might be the gateway cat to "cat lady." I don't know why I can't help but feeling that having multiple cats is the pet equivalent to that family on TV who has 17 kids, and is apparently still counting?
Then again, some people house a whole fleet of dogs without falling victim to the stereotype.
Do cats get a bum rap? Are we ever going to see a CNN.com slideshow of past presidents' non-dog pets? Probably not.
They might not be the official pet of presidents, but they are an amazing entertainment source. And while I'm sure there are some other predispositions to becoming the crazy cat lady other than owning more than a couple pets, I think I'll just stick to the two that already run my house.

Julie, you are well on your way to becoming "the cat lady"

Your pet limit should be based on how many pets you can care for financially and emotionally. If you can't afford routine health care or decent food for your pets, you shouldn't have them. They also require attention; it's not fair to leave a hamster sitting in a cage like a piece of furniture. The same goes for kids!

Three pets (mammals) living in one house is too many.

I recall back in my college days.. I lived in a zoo. None of these pets were mine, all of them belonged to my 2 roommates; 5 Cockatiels, 2 canaries, one parrot, 2 goldfish, a scorpion, a turtle, a salt water fish tank full of fish, a kitten named Loki, and a pit bull named Titan. I think that was a weee too many. Now I am happy living in my pet free existence.

i am certainly guilty of having too many animals. but it's seriously because i love too much. we charge admission to enter our house to offset the rent, and kinda treat it as a petting zoo. Dogs and cats, living together (mass hysteria!) a turtle, guinea pig and hamster. And if i ever find a english bulldog who needs to be rescued the number will continue to grow. Dogs generally take care of themselves after a year of good training, children meanwhile don't know what they are really doing until well into their 20's. I'll take the animals...they don't need to go to college.
