What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published Aug. 3, 2009 at 9:48 p.m.

I read an interview tonight with the designer who created the iconic Apple logo, and it got me thinking: What are the logos that resonate the most with me?

I'm not a professional graphic designer, but it's certainly part of my job, and I've created plenty of logos in my day. I've also interviewed Tom Meindel, the designer who made my all-time favorite logo, the old "ball and glove" Milwaukee Brewers insignia.

It's certainly not easy to create a logo that will stand the test of time (we've had three in 11 years here at OnMilwaukee.com), and it's tough to make a logo that will look great in all applications, sizes and on different backgrounds.

So I thought of my favorite corporate logos, then hopped online to see what other people think. The "experts" and I agree in many cases, and in some we don't (I'm not particularly blown away by Pepsi, for example).

Some of these corporate logos may be high on my list because of their personal significance to me, others are just great design. If you care, weigh in with your favorite logos using the Talkback feature below:

  • Apple
  • Atari
  • BMW
  • MG
  • Major League Baseball
  • Milwaukee Brewers (ball and glove)
  • OnMilwaukee.com (sorry, I had to)
  • Schlitz
  • Sony
  • Starbucks
  • Target
  • UPS
  • Volkswagen

One non-profit I work with.. Southeastern Wisconsin Deaf Senior Citizens, just underwent a re-branding. This amazing local deaf graphics design artist created a beautiful logo of a tree.. but if you look closely you will see each branch forms the sign for "I Love You"!

Another logo that has a 'hidden' element is the old Northwest Airlines logo (with just the circle and 'N').. it uses a compass point at NW (not by coincidence) to form a 'hidden' W using the N. It's possibly the most brilliant logo I know of, and totally unappreciated. Unfortunately, it was dumped in their reorg.

Hey littletinyfish, how about the hidden "11" in the Big Ten logo? That's weird.

For me, some of the greats are Starbucks, the Brewers ball and glove logo, the Packers "G" symbol, I always liked the Seahawks "bird head" logo, too, and the Denver Broncos "horse head" logo is cool, too. One question for you guys: what will you do with your logo if they decide to eliminate the Hoan Bridge? I sure hope they don't, but I've heard talk of late.
