I go to Mayfair all the time and I would never expect to be held up at gun point inside the mall. But that's exactly what happened to someone yesterday at lunch time, it seems. Not in the parking lot, but right inside the mall, inside a bathroom. Luckily no shots were fired and no one was hurt.
Amazingly, the police arrived and captured the suspect in less than 10 minutes and news reports on TV last night showed shoppers, rightfully praising the Wauwatosa police for their speed and efficiency. Police took two men into custody but found no weapon, despite a search of the mall's west parking lot, in the area around Boston Store and Barnes & Noble.
This will certainly re-launch the debate about Mayfair, which led to the rules requiring young people to have a guardian with them while shopping at the mall during certain days and times. But, we all know this kind of thing can happen anywhere.
Still, it freaks me out a little bit, since I'm usually at the mall with my toddler. But I will still go, because -- well -- see the paragraph above. But I might think twice about using the bathrooms down those long, often deserted corridors.
I also hear that Milwaukee Downtown has hired a D.C.-based firm to spend a year trying to attract more retail to Downtown (outside The Shops at Grand Avenue).
If they're smart, they'll make a point to note that armed robberies are rare in Downtown, since the retail decline of what my mom and grandma called "The Avenue" is due to mistaken or outdated ideas about the situation there.
But the real key will be to get some big-draw, "unique to Downtown" national retailers that will draw folks in from the neighborhoods and the suburbs.

BluMilo you are missing the point. Once you threaten someone with a fireman and are caught, you have made your decision and must accept the consequences. This isnt about worthy social program or quality schools, its about accountability and the knowledge that there are consequences for your actions. I heard on the news last night that these morons face 20 years in prison. How much you want to bet that they are back on the streets in less than 2 years ready to commit mayhem on the rest of us again. I truly believe that these idiots should never get out of prison, so they can no longer threaten civil society.

BluMilo: I would agree with Wauwatosa... we can't continue to slap the wrists of folks who try to use various reasons (i.e. we don't have any place else to go; it's racial, etc.) to excuse poor behavior. If you are bringing a gun to a mall, you deserve to be punished. There's no reason for it and no explanation is acceptable. The indirect message we continually send to thugs is society has failed you and therefore, we all should feel guilty for this supposed failure. The message continues: we're not going to punish you for societies failure to instill good values in you; instead we'll throw money at the problem and never get at (or acknowledge) the root cause of the issue: lack of parental accountability in raising the child they created! I taught for 9 years and yes, I DO have a problem paying more taxes for school programs and\or extra curricular activities, community organizations that enable bad parents to never accept responsibility for their actions. I'm all for empathy but at some point we have to be able to discern who is taking advantage of the system and who is simply being a lazy parent and not living up to their end of the parenting bargain.

@ wauwatosa: would you also be willing to pay more taxes for schools, extra-curriculars, and community organizations that will help our young people develop skills that will not lead to more crime and violence? We need alternatives to "hanging out" for youth (and adults!) and should be placing less emphasis on buying "stuff" as opposed to exchanging skills and ideas to build communities.

If i'm not mistaken wasnt there a gang shooting outside the Southridge food court last year? The robbery last week at Mayfair is a bummer, lets see how much time these a@#$holes get when they are covicted-my guess they'll be back on the street within months doing it again. My theory is that if you threaten someone with a gun you should go to prison for life, period. I' d be more than happy to pay more taxes to build more prisons it thats what it takes.

I don't worry about getting robbed at a mall for one simple reason: I don't go to malls. There's really no reason to, since there are plenty of stores and restaurants that are not in a mall. And let's face it - malls suck. Don't worry, be happy. Don't go to malls.
