New Walgreen's feels a bit like a mini Target
I'm fairly certain that Walgreen's saw an opportunity when it leased its new location on the first floor of the Mandel Group's LightHorse development at 4041 N. Oakland Ave.
Target's left the market somewhat wide open since it doesn't have a store that's convenient for residents of Downtown Milwaukee, the East Side, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay. Of course, Walgreen's is no Target. But increasingly the long-time pharmacy turned nearly everything store has ramped up its game and become more of a one stop shop.
I'll admit that my Walgreen's use goes up when its location is newer, cleaner and more full of offerings. I'm usually just a "when the kid is sick" Walgreen's user, but the chain's newer stores are more pleasant to shop in, easier to roam and provide many more reasons to stop in and look around.
This new location in the Village of Shorewood features a grocery section, large beer selection, a frozen food area, a well lit and slightly upscale health and beauty section, nice waiting area, modern photo desk and interactive technologies throughout. It's not your basic drug store. It's nothing like the Chicago location on State Street, but it's new, shiny and modern.
The new store also has better hours as it's open seven days per week from 7 a.m. to midnight.
Check out the gallery of photos in the scroll above. Next, let's hope that Oakland Avenue continues its growth in Shorewood by getting that outdated Pick 'N Save to also refresh or rebuild.
Funny. I was in a Target that felt like a Walgreens once.
