I recently told you about the new push to get a co-op bookshop open in Shorewood to replace the now-defunct Schwartz location on Oakland Avenue. Tonight there's a kick-off rally at 7 p.m. at Hubbard Park River Club, 3656 N. Morris Blvd.
"We will have information about what the book store will be about, how to support it and enable it to open the doors in fall," says Keith Schmitz, one of the organizers of the rally.
The community is not only invited, but encouraged to attend to help make the co-op a reality.
The get to the River Club, enter through the pedestrian tunnel at the west end of the parking lot.

Please do not be led to think this is a great thing for the East Side. Boswell's Book Store with Daniel Goldin is and will always be the mecca for book lovers in this area. Please make sure you get all of the facts and projections for revenue and potential investors before you invest as a member. I did and I will not be joining as I don't think it will succeed. Boswell's has the heart and soul of a neighborhood bookshop - no matter how hard Open Book tries, the people running it will never exude that warmth. Not just my opinion - I have heard it from others who are using the word "disgusted" to describe what these folks are trying to do to Boswell's by creating another bookstore where none is needed.

I am of two minds on this. On the one hand I like the idea but on the other I worry that this will hurt the two remaining bookstores that evolved after Schwartz. They are trying to make it and I would hate for this to add to their eventual demise. Also, isn't a library pretty much a book coop?!!! We have a pretty great, new one in Shorewood! I know that you cannot buy books there, but you certainly could support it! From what I hear, the problem that Schwartz had was that the customers were loyal and used it as a wonderful meeting place, but they rarely bought enough books to support the store.

This is more great news for the local community! We have already contributed to Broader Vocabulary, and would be very interested in doing the same with Open Book. If we can't make the meeting tonight, how can we stay in touch with Open Book's progress?
