March Madness, mysteries, unexpected surprises and more in this week's edition of OnMilwaukee.com recommends.
"Wrong Mother" by Sophie Hannah - Something about chilly weather makes me yearn for a good English mystery novel. Hannah is a rare find in the publishing world - a she has you turning the pages, but she's also a very talented wordsmith. Her main character, Sally Thorning, is shocked when she hears about the murder/suicide of Geraldine and Lucy Bretherick, the wife and young child of businessman Mark Bretherick - mostly because the Mark Bretherick grieving on the evening news is not the Mark Bretherick she spent a secret, illicit week with a year ago, unbeknownst to her own family. This tangled, compelling web of deceit, assumed identities and murder most foul keeps you guessing until the very last page. You can buy it on Amazon, but I got it at Boswell Book Company, 255 N. Downer Ave. - and frankly, I think you should, too. - Colleen Jurkiewicz
Weekend sports - It's the dog days of ... spring? Well, get inside and go to the BMO Harris Bradley Center Sunday afternoon to see the Milwaukee Bucks host the Atlanta Hawks at 2 p.m. It's the final game of the series and it has huge playoff implications for the Bucks, who are trying to move up in seed in the Eastern Conference. - Jim Owczarski
Leaving little gifts for people – The new OnMilwaukee.com intern, Monica Thomas, left the surprise from the inside of her Cracker Jacks' box next to my computer. I had noticed her eating the classic snacks (not enough peanuts anymore!) and so when she clandestinely left the surprise for me I found it humorous. And actually, even as an adult it was fun to open up the surprise, a cardboard bee pencil topper. Not that the prize really mattered. - Molly Snyder
