Sheridan's Finest Wines and Generous Spirits, an original tenant in the Milwaukee Public Market, is holding a storewide moving sale in anticipation of a move early next year.
Sources have confirmed that Sheridan's will move into a new development at 153 N. Broadway (Broadway and Menomonee). The official address of the new location, though, will be 330 E. Menomonee St. A source at Sheridan's said the space is "still in the design stages."
According to a company e-mail, Sheridan's is "moving and improving" so it is selling all inventory at 10 percent off. The e-mail also says that a "new name and new look" are coming.
Sheridan's is owned by Lee Barczak and Jane Schilz. They also operate the Sheridan House hotel, café and restaurant in Cudahy.
Thief Wine and Shop opened this summer in the Public Market. Vino 100 also has a Third Ward location at 102 N. Water St.

My friends and I go to Vino often because of their great wines and $5 corkage fee. I haven't seen the over-inflated prices you mentioned. Thief's a great addition to the area, but we love the wine bar, live music and atmosphere at Vino in general.

"This summer I asked for assistance finding a Wisconsin wine (I was in a hurry), but upon getting it to its final destination on the west coast, discovered that it was Californian, with no Wisconsin tie whatsoever. Never shopped there again." As a current member of the staff, I apologize that you felt this way. I can assure you that it was a wine that came to us from Stone's Throw Winery in Door County, WI...and they do in fact purchase the majority of their grapes from CA. They crush, barrel, and bottle here in WI. True, the label must read "California" with regards to the origin of the grapes, but the WI tie is there none the less. I hope that we can give you more in depth information in the future. Cheers!

I still never understand these wine stores. The Metro Market and Downer Wine and Spirits are so much better than these places...and you can get things for non-wine drinkers while you are there.

I never thought the location for Sheridan's was stellar in the market. Thief wine's location is great. The wine bar is key and that is where Sheridan's fell short. The owner's of Thief Wine are just fantastic. The selection is diverse. Of course, if I lived closer to Discount liquor I would shop there for my wine because as one post stated, it's the best selection in MKE. But since I live in the 3rd ward Thief has become a 2nd home. Vino 100 is nice, yet I still prefer Thief mainly because the owners know wine. I'm sure I'll visit Sheridan's when it moves to their new location and I hope they do well there. To tell you the truth the more new bars in the 3rd ward the better, especially wine bars. It would be nice for them to have some microbrews on tap. I think more folks would frequent the place then.

It's cool they are moving on. At least they will take a space and renovate it (or move into one already established) and continue the upgrade of downtown Milwaukee. NEVER a bad thing. Having worked at Fountain Blue 'as it was closed' in 1998, and seeing it sit empty for so long, I'm delighted by what they did with the place (Sheridans) - it was the original name as well for the building - and while it's hard to see some changes (the long bar for example), they took a Cudahy eyesore and made it beautiful. Kudo's to them!
