For Nate Kuester, his recent post on the anchor desk on weekday mornings at WDJT-TV Ch. 58 is a welcome return to the Midwest.

"I was actually born about an hour and a half south of here," Kuester said, telling the story of his family, which was at the Naval Station Great Lakes in northern Illinois.

Kuester said that both he and his wife have connections to the state, and he jumped at the opportunity when the opening at the CBS affiliate became available.

"I love fall in Wisconsin," he said as he was unpacking boxes when we spoke over the weekend last month. We also talked about the Milwaukee market, and how it may be a big city, it feels like a small town in a lot of ways. "It’s an easy drive into work."

Kuester, who covered sports in his past, welcomes the opportunity to mix area teams’ coverage into his duties on the morning newscast.

"I’m a sports guy at heart," he said. "I love the camaraderie with the Packers, and the Brewers have super fans."

Kuester said his love of the Packers developed when he was in Oklahoma and started following Brett Favre with the Super Bowl run in 1996. In the morning show, that can cover an array of topics from the hard news of the day to water cooler talk, Kuester was looking forward to mixing more sports and talk into that mix with Jessica Tighe and Lance Hill on CBS 58.

And, he’s looking forward to exploring more into his new hometown.

"We came in at the very end of the festival season, where there is something going on every weekend," he said. Kuester said he hasn’t been around to many places yet, but remembered seeing a cable show on A.J. Bombers and made sure to check it out.

One of the things I love about interviewing new anchors and reporters in the market is to share the wealth of suggestions that’s on OnMilwaukee.com. I’m sure he’d like your suggestions as well, drop them off on his Facebook page.

DIGITAL OPTIONS: My love of older TV shows runs deep. It starts with the original runs of cop dramas and sitcoms in the 1970s and 1980s, and then through channels like WCGV-TV Ch. 24 and WVTV-TV Ch. 18 that ran the syndicated reruns.

Now I get my fix from TV Land on cable, a number of different web sites online, and a guilty pleasure of viewing with an older set hooked up to a digital converter box to get the digital sub channels. For instance, WTMJ-TV Ch. 4 runs its main signal on 4-1 on the over-the-air signal. On sub-channel 4-2, it is the station’s weather channel with current conditions and the meteorologists offering updated forecasts.

For WITI-TV Ch. 6, its sub-channel 6-2 offers 6.2 Antenna TV. The recent "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" marathon gave the station a first – a measurable tie with a station’s main feed. The Halloween-timed event brought in a 0.4 rating from Nielsen, enough to go head-to-head with WCGV-TV My 24.
