Against my better judgment, I gave Bucky's Super Video, 1601 E. Oklahoma Ave., one last chance tonight. As much as I strive to give my business to the little guys and not the Blockbusters of the world, I've rented no fewer than five scratched or otherwise defective DVDs from this local video store in the last few years.
Tonight it was "Ocean's 12," and 20 minutes into the movie, the DVD began skipping, stalling and freezing up. If it wasn't almost 11 p.m., I'd take it back and ask for another copy. But it's a little late, literally and figuratively speaking.
Pretty much every other DVD we rent from Bucky's is defective these days. The last time, my wife returned the movie and complained to the manager. She asked him if they check their products. He said there's no way they could do that. She asked if they guarantee their products or if she could have a refund, and he said no.
For a while, we gave up on Bucky's and instead used Blockbuster for our rentals. Then tonight, we gave it one more try. And tomorrow we'll officially cancel our membership to a manager we anticipate will be indifferent.
We really do want to keep the indie video stores in business, but when their products doesn't measure up, time after time, what are we supposed to do? Tonight was supposed to be movie night. Instead, it was another exercise in DVD frustration.

Buckys always treated me right. I remember being a little kid about 15 years ago and having my mom take me there, and i would always be able to buy chick-o sticks, and lotsafizz, and gummie watches. But other than nostalgia... Buckies still rolls out deals with the buy 2 movies, get two popcorns and 4 Black bear. another ups that bucky's has over blockbuster (At over the one by picknsave) is the parking lot. That blockbuster has the parking lot of death. And on more related terms, i rarely get scratched DVDs from blockbuster. and always find the employes helpful and freindly.

I hope you realize how completely arrogant you are. You say that you have NO MORE THAT 5 MOVIES IN THE PAST FEW YEARS that were damaged. Those odds are pretty good. Think of how many of your own DVDs or CD that get damaged from regular use. Don't attack a perfectly good independent business. I have never had any problems there what-so-ever. The staff is always friendly and willing to help. However, I don't throw a fit and demand my money back. You get further in life by treating people with the respect they deserve. Checking every single movie as it comes in would only slow down the process of renting them back out. And their lack of titles? THEY ARE AN INDEPENDENT BUSINESS! THEY DO NOT HAVE THE CORPORATE SUPPORT OF "BLOCKBUSTER"!! Get over it. They have been around almost 22 years, I think they know a thing or two about the movie industry.

I am an employee at Bucky's Super Video and I just wanted to state that it is utterly imposible to check every dvd that has been returned to us. I mean yes we see it there are any major scratches but we don't have the time to veiw everyone. And we don't do refunds but if you let us know that you have an issue we will give you a free rental or clean it for you and let you try it again. As long as you arn't screaming at us asking for your money back we would be pleased to help you.

I think it's nice that you want to try a local store versus a big company, but I think the big company offers better deals and backs up their product. So I'm with the other comment that said go Netflix.

It's true, Bucky's has customer service issues they need work out. My final visit was when I returned a movie and they tried billing me a late fee for a movie I never rented. I was adamant I didn't rent the flick and the manager said, "Well, we'll have to go through our receipts in order to verify it". I didn't leave until they did. Twenty minutes later, they admitted their error. It's unfortunate. I like supporting the small Bay View businesses, but this and the weird return time policies pushed me away. Actually, ever since I got a satellite dish, I haven't rented in a long time.
