In the wake of the Shepherd Express stepping back from the Milwaukee International Film Festival, a new international film festival organization -- called Milwaukee Film -- with a new board of directors was announced today.
While the organization searches for an executive director, a statement issued today notes that Milwaukee Film will host screenings and events this autumn and will return with a full festival in 2009.
Milwaukee Film has so far raised $200,000 to "feature films from around the world as well as locally-produced films from Wisconsin, and particularly those produced in Milwaukee." This fall, Milwaukee Film will present films made by Milwaukee filmmakers.
Milwaukee Film has retained the MIFF staff, including artistic director Jon Jackson, operations director Kyle Heller and program coordinator T.J. Fackelman.
"We are excited to help shape the future of a new international film festival in Milwaukee," said Chris Abele, president and CEO of the Argosy Foundation, in the statement. "We've already received an overwhelmingly positive response from funders, and their generous seed money has built great momentum as we move forward with plans for the new festival."
"We are looking forward to this opportunity to create a world-class film festival and provide Milwaukee with quality cultural events," said Jackson, Milwaukee Film Artistic Director. "We are especially committed to collaborating with the community as we seek to grow the local film industry."

The Milwaukee International Film Festival announced a plan to refund all ticket sales and membership purchases within the next two weeks. An e-mail sent to festival supporters from the "MIFF Board" (Louis Fortis and Dave Luhrssen) invites anyone claiming a refund to e-mail Administration@milwaukeefilmfest.org. Include your full name, payment amount and mailing address.

We right now have an event called Milwaukee Short Film Fest ran by Ross Bigly for the last 10 years! So is this a case of the big boys running amok over the little film maker because they can? Or simply a matter of those who should know what is going on in the city no having a clue?

Milwaukee's film festival has been held back and ill-managed for too long. Smoke and mirrors have provided the assumption that the festival's founders are gods for starting a film festival. However there's no doubt it was started to raise their egos and inflate the Shepherd's pocketbook.

The three staffers running it are not the ones who "ran it into the ground." That's a pretty unfair assumption. They were separate from the funding end, and instead invested their all into the artistic side creating an innovative and engaging festival for the past five years. Milwaukee is very lucky these guys didn't hang up their hats and/or leave town while investors worked out the financial backing. Clearly "Idle" has no clue that their are many facets to non-profit organizations and that funding and boards are often completely removed from hard-working staff.

It appears the story is that the same people that started MIFF -- namely the Shepherd people -- decided they wanted to get paid back for the money they put in and that likely bankrupted an already precarious financial situation. Some have hinted that there were unethical things going on but no one has really said what, exactly, it seems. I guess it's up to everyone to decide whether or not the founders are heroes for starting it and have every right to get their investment back or villains for wanting to get their investment back at the cost of the future of the festival.
