The Milwaukee Underground Film Festival is back for its 11th edition this Friday through Sunday. The UWM student-run festival will feature around 50 videos and films from around the world throughout its three-day run.

Student organizers Andrew Gralton and Kira Klein, both in their second year of working with M.U.F.F., are excited about this year's event.

"This year's festival will be one of our best. We are showing work by acclaimed experimental filmmakers like Tominari Nishikawa and Robert Todd," said Klein.

This festival isn't just for national and international filmmakers, however.

"Entering its 11th year, M.U.F.F. continues to show work from all over the world, as well as from local Milwaukee makers such as Kate Balsley, Isaac Sherman and Patrick Wodzinski." Gralton said.

"As a student run festival, M.U.F.F. is also a unique opportunity for film students at UW-Milwaukee to create an event that exists not just on campus but in the community," said Gralton.

Though it is billed as being a festival that will heavily feature experimental films and works, Gralton said will be something for everybody.

"People coming to the festival can expect to experience motion picture work unlike anything they've seen before. The pieces are incredibly varied in their form and content, but a common thread of exploration and innovation run throughout the programs," said Gralton.

Said Klein, "Our programs this year have something for everyone. From beautiful technical exercises on 16mm, to documentary, to experimental narratives, to hilarious VHS footage, the artist's work is just all over the board."

Judging this year's event are Roger Beebe from Gainsville, Fla., Lori Felker from Chicago and Nicholas Frank, who curates the UWM INOVA gallery.

Beebe is an associate professor of English at the University of Florida and current artistic director of the Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival, and is the filmmaker behind "The Strip Mall Trilogy."

Felker is a professor at the Art Institute of Chicago and is also a filmmaker and coordinator of the Chicago Underground Film Fest.

• Friday, May 6: 7 p.m. at UWM Union Theatre, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.
• Saturday, May 7:  6 and 8 p.m. at Walker's Point Center for the Arts, 839 S. 5th St.
• Sunday, May 8: 3 and 6 p.m. at Kenilworth Square East, 4th Floor, Studio 408.

On Sunday, M.U.F.F. will also be hosting a potluck dinner between the 3 and 6 p.m. showings, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
