The summer movie season is upon us – even apparently at Netflix, which announced an admittedly impressive list of new arrivals for the month of May.

For those who've read these columns before and know my tendencies toward either hating the Big Red Streaming Monolith or clanging the warning bells of the streaming apocalypse, that statement must come as a surprise. But seriously, Netflix's slate for the month of May is across the board awfully great.

When it comes to Netflix Originals, there's the AOC documentary "Knock Down the House," which received strong reviews out on the festival circuit; the Central Park Five limited series "When They See Us" from "Selma" director Ava DuVernay; "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile" featuring Zac Efron as Ted Bundy; and "Wine Country," aka a Maya Rudolph/Amy Poehler wine buddy comedy, aka a absolutely delightful and great idea for a movie. And most important show of all, there's the third season of "Nailed It," the perfect cooking show for people like me who can't cook a can of Spaghettios. 

But of course the Netflix Originals lineup is strong; in a year or two, it's all the streaming service will have left when the rest of the studios join the streaming game. But that's why it's so surprising their non-originals lineup is strong too, featuring big names like the first two Austin Powers films, "Dumb and Dumber," "The Dark Crystal," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," "Moonlight," "Hoosiers," "Gremlins," "Scream," "Scarface" and the "Matrix" trilogy. There's even new releases like "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" and "Bathtubs Over Broadway," which just happens to be one of the best movies of 2019 so far. 

I mean, you'll likely only have a few months to enjoy all of those selections – "Jaws," just added in February, will be gone next month, along with "The Notebook," which Netflix picked up barely a month ago – but hey, take what you can get in this brave new streaming world.
