If you're among the fans of "Just a Little Lovin'," the most recent disc by Shelby Lynne that finds the country pop chanteuse paying tribute to one of her favorite records, Dusty Springfield's landmark 1969 blue-eyed soul disc, "Dusty in Memphis," you can thank Barry Manilow.
Yup, Barry "Mandy" Manilow.
"One day back in the spring of '05, I received an e-mail from Barry Manilow," Lynne writes in a statement about the disc, released back in January. "He asked me if I have ever considering covering the Dusty Springfield songbook."
Although she didn't act on the idea at the time, it stuck in her head and when it came time to record a follow-up to 2005's "Suit Yourself," she contacted producer Phil Ramone.
"I want to cut the Dusty Springfield songs," she told him. "I think we can do that," replied the veteran producer and Lynne's Lost Highway Records' label debut was born.
While some of the 10 tracks on the Lynne disc are covers of songs that appeared on "Dusty in Memphis" -- including the opener "Just a Little Bit of Lovin'" and Randy Newman's "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" -- others derive from other sources.
"I Only Wanna Be With You" -- known to a different generation as a Bay City Rollers hit -- was Springfield's solo debut.
"Pretend" is a Lynne original.
So, what makes a singer riding Lynne's career trajectory want to record a disc of covers by Dusty Springfield?
"Dusty Springfield was a soulful singer," Lynne explains. "You can't ever fill her shoes. So I just set out to sing songs we all want to hear again. The road map I followed when cutting these was the one she made years ago. It was easy. I just sang and let the songs do the work."
Lynne returns to Milwaukee for an 8 p.m. show at Turner Hall Ballroom on Friday, Nov. 28. Tickets are $25.
Some other gigs on tap this week include:
Potawatomi's Northern Lights Theater hosts "Asian Music Night" on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 8 p.m. with Dam Vinh Hung, Ho Le Thu, The Strikers and others. Tickets are $10-$20.
The following night Susan Tedeschi and British soul belter James Hunter team up for an 8 p.m. gig and tickets run $40-$50.
The Cactus Club in Bay View is alive this week with The Etiquette and The Response on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 10 p.m., and The Get Down Dance Party Friday at 10.

Or you can opt to see a version of Yes at the Riverside at 8 p.m. for $35 or $75. After Yes was forced to end its 40th anniversary tour this summer when Jon Anderson got sick, Steve Howe, Alan White and Chris Squire brought in Oliver Wakeman and Canadian Yes tribute band vet Benoit David for the "In the Present" tour.
"This isn't an attempt to replace Jon Anderson because, as we all know, that would be impossible," said Squire in a statement at the launch of the tour. "With Benoit, we are bringing in a talented singer so that we can go out and honor the music of Yes for the fans who have waited for the past four years to see us perform."
On Sunday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. you can check out The DDS Show for free at Shank Hall. Presented by C4J Records The DDS Show is an evening of live music, a talent showcase and a fashion show.
