"Runnin' Down A Dream," director Peter Bogdanovich's new film featuring in-depth interviews and concert footage of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, is released as part of a special four-disc box set on Oct. 16.
The package, initially available only at Best Buy, features the two-DVD, four-hour Bogdanovich film, along with a DVD of the band's 30th anniversary concert in the band's hometown, Gainesville, Fla.
The package also includes a soundtrack CD of rarities and previously unreleased tracks from the film.
In advance of the release, the film will screen at theaters across the country on Oct. 15. According to tompetty.com, the film will be shown that night at the Downer Theatre, 2589 N. Downer Ave.
If that's not enough Petty for you, there will a coffee table book "Runnin' Down A Dream -- The Book," a 240-page tome including interviews, photos and materials from the band's personal archives. That will be available later this fall.
Stay tuned to OnMilwaukee.com for more details as they become available. In the meantime, here is the band performing "Runnin' Down A Dream" at the Gainesville concert.

how do you know there's nothing fascinating about him or how even-keeled he is if you haven't seen the movie or read the book? if you're not a big fan i don't understand how you can know so much about him. maybe he's a wildman. maybe he's absolutely crazy. maybe he's neither, but still has some keen insights. or maybe he's not fascinating and just even-keeled. i guess i'll have to see the film to find out.

I like Tom Petty, but I don't love him. He's good, but he's not great. So with that, this ought to be a mediocre film at best, even if it's technically well done. I give Petty credit for being around for 30 years, but he's never had the excitement of the Stones, Cobain, the Beatles, Sex Pistols, or a Hendrix. There's just nothing facinating about Petty that would make for compelling film. He's just an even-keeled guy. *yawn*
