“i never expected to hear a voice like that.”
after 15 years touring, writing and recording, that is the one phrase that keeps coming back to haunt the pianist/guitarist/singer kris crow. his soulful voice can knock you down, lift you up, dust you off and move your feet.
kris toured with the westfall for the last 8 years and has also gone on the road with freshwater collins, e.k.g. and moonshine sway. he has shared the stage with rusted root, dilated peoples, dark star orchestra, keller williams, umphrey's mcgee, the new deal, vince welnick (grateful dead), dj logic, fareed hauqe, melvin sparks, merl saunders, the om trio and the greyhounds.
now with the desire to go solo, crow rarely takes time to sing his own praises. he is usually too busy fulfilling requests. “ i like to see people happy and moving around. if i am able to make people do that, how could i not?” says kris.
four uniquely different shows:
piano/solo – a high energy show. usually a blend of the rat pack, al green, stevie wonder, bill withers, the piano man standards billy joel and elton john and much more.
piano/band – a more in depth study of funk and jazz. freddie hubbard, herbie hancock, stevie wonder, john scofield, jimmy smith and others
guitar/solo – this show defies the pre-conceived notion of an acoustic guitarist. kris has been known to jump around stage and sing at the top of his lungs. the music in the show is tailored to the crowd and no request is too off the wall.
guitar/band – this is one of the most unique shows kris offers. it usually begins with kris’ alter ego “johnny sturgeon” strutting up to the stage full of confidence (and mullet wig) with his band “the bait masters” and yelling something about how there is no rock song that he can’t play. he dares the crowd to take him on and the stage presence and show is as funny as it is entertaining. songs include the guess who, jimi hendrix, led zeppelin, allman brothers, doobie brothers, the beatles, stones and more.
