Break into the Big Gig is back
The flurries are flying and it’s hard to picture ourselves with a beer at the Big Gig, but the folks at Milwaukee World Festival are working at fever pitch on Summerfest and so is Roy Henning, who has organized an annual battle of the bands competition that leads to a performance at Summerfest for the past eight years.
"We again have four contests running and will be giving away four spots at Summerfest," says Henning, who adds that the road to the Big Gig starts this Friday at The Up and Under Pub, 1216 E. Brady St.
The first two The Break into the Big Gig(TM) Battle of the Bands presented by Durasmoke contests will be March 22-23, 29-31 and April 5-6 with finals on April 12-13. Another round of contests takes place April 19-20, 26-27 and May 3-4 with finals on May 10-11.
All the Friday battles are staged at the Up and Under and all the Saturdays take place at The Down and Over, 2535 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., in Bay View.
The bars will offer drink specials during performances all eight weekends and the grand prize winners get slots on a main stage at Summerfest.
Get ready to rock, Milwaukee.

At the Haggerty Museum of Art on the Marquette University campus, which runs a number of shows concurrently, the exhibitions are digestible and varied. You can get your arms around them and really focus and imbibe. At the moment, there are four shows on view, three of which opened together last week and all of which close on July 28.

World-class AGS collection puts Milwaukee on the map

Call it the worst-kept secret or the best-kept secret - depending on your point of view - but the American Geographical Society Library at UW-Milwaukee's Golda Meir Library is one of the best geography resources in the country. The collection holds more than a million items, ranging from maps and atlases to pamphlets and journals, globes and photographs of all kinds. Though it is housed in Milwaukee, the AGS collection has roots in New York and covers the entire planet.
