Many MPS schools have thriving partnerships with local institutions and businesses to help bolster the options available to kids. Bay View's Trowbridge School is an example.

The school focuses on Great Lakes Studies and works with, among others, Discovery World to introduce kids to the museum's programs but also to the S/V Denis Sullivan schooner.

Today, Trowbridge principal Tom Matthews sent out a note to the community asking it to support Discovery World's S/V Denis Sullivan fundraising event in early October.

Here is Matthews' letter...

"Dear Friends of the Denis Sullivan,

"On Oct. 6, Discovery World is hosting a fundraiser to support the freshwater education programs of the S/V Denis Sullivan. I'm not going to get into all the details like hours and price, as all of that information is listed below.

"The reason I need you to support this event is because its students like mine that benefit from the Sullivan's freshwater programs. Just this year, all 300 Trowbridge students took part in one of the Sullivan's Science Under Sail programs. 80 percent of these students live in households under the poverty level and, would not have had this wonderful experience without help from people like you. My goal is to take my students aboard the Sullivan every year so they continue to learn and expand their educational horizons. And, there are many, many more students who stand to benefit at city schools other than just Trowbridge elementary.

"So please, when you attend this event on Oct. 6, have fun, enjoy the food but, most of all, remember the kids that you are helping. If you can't attend, why don't you consider sending them a check anyway? After all, it's not about the hors d'oeuvres, it's about the future that will soon be in our children's hands."

As Matthews promises in his first paragraph, here is all the info you need for the fundraising event ...

Thursday, Oct. 6; 5:30-8 p.m. at Discovery World, 500 N. Harbor Dr. Call (414) 765.8625 and to make reservations. Pre-sale price is $25, $30 on the day of the event. A special pre-sale four-pack of tickets is $80.

Even if you can't make it, you can send a donation to Discovery World.
