Milwaukee's Marlboro Man
I've known Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke since before he ran for office and I've always found him a little bit of an enigma.
He runs as a Democrat but is clearly a Republican. And his combative style, with supervisors, the county executive, his officers, the police chief and just about anyone else who crosses him is legend.
I have now finally figured him out.
Sheriff Clarke is really The Marlboro Man.
You know the cigarette icon who was stoic, tough, a man's man, ready to ride his steed into any battle that needed to be fought? That's Clarke.
I was watching a local television news channel this week (which is a rare occurrence in itself because local news channel is an oxymoron) and they were covering an event where Clarke was present.
My jaw dropped when I saw him. Instead of his crisp sheriff's uniform he was wearing a white cowboy hat and cowboy boots. He had on a tight red T-shirt and blue jeans with a silver belt buckle about the size of your average dinner plate. He had a black gun on his hip and a grim look on his face.
If I didn't know better, I'd think that here was a guy wandering the streets looking for the OK corral. I think cowboy hats and big belt buckles ought to be outlawed for sheriff's as well as accountants, retail salesmen, bus drivers and school teachers.
But our very own Marlboro man isn't about to change.

I love the Sheriff. He's the only politician in Milwaukee with any common sense, and the only one willing to stand up for what's right when it comes to the ridiculous liberal antics from silver-spoon-in-mouth-county-executive Abele.
I think that the Sheriff should ride around Milwaukee on horseback and shoot criminals, just like in the old westerns. It would be vigilante justice, to be sure, but it would be far more effective and just than the Milwaukee County Court System!

The Journal Sentinel just hired someone named David Paulsen to be its new Breaking News Editor. Paulsen comes to the paper after stints as a reporter in Wausau and Poughkeepsie, N. Y. and two years at Fox News. Well, when the announcement was made the cries from staffers in the newsroom in Downtown Milwaukee could be heard throughout the civilized world.

We boo because we care

Do something great and we adore our heroes with shouts, screams and applause. We care and we show we care. What are we to do when they screw something up? We care about them just as much and ignoring their failure should not be part of this equation. Not caring is worse, much worse, than disapproving. We have to let them know that we who depend on them so much are disappointed.
Etiquette: why stop at forks?

Enough young people have been convinced they should care about using the proper fork that a number of colleges and universities in Milwaukee have started holding etiquette classes for students headed out for job interview lunches and dinners. I see no reason, however, to limit this to meals. Think of all the opportunities these kids are missing.

Nobody is born a criminal. There is no inevitability to a kid becoming a criminal. There is something else at work here, and that leads us to the big question: Does crime cause poverty or does poverty cause crime?
Paying for fun is nothing new

Excitement, recreation and fun are good things and they are well worth paying for. Let's remove the science from this debate and just concentrate on the style of life and caliber of a city we all really want.
