A funny thing happened on the way to Super Bowl XIII

With the Super Bowl approaching kickoff, I was reminded of a CNN story from the other night about the increased demand for escorts and women of the night during the big weekend.

The story reminded me of Super Bowl XIII in Miami in 1979, which I covered.

I got on a plane in Chicago and was seated next to a real good looking woman. She was about 30, with fair skin and dressed to the nines.

She was reading a book and interrupted her reading to say hello. We chatted a bit, and after a short time, I discovered that she was on her way to the Super Bowl to work and provide a service to some of the men there.

She was obviously fishing, and she wasn’t the least bit ashamed or coy about her services. I declined, but she didn’t seem all that upset about it.

She turned back to her book, which I noticed was a notorious book called "The Happy Hooker: My Own Story," written by Xaviera Hollander, a famous call girl and madam in New York.

I chuckled and asked her why she was reading that book. She looked at me with a smile on her face and told me why.

"Think of it as cramming for a final exam."

Ah, the Super Bowl.
