No attraction to "The Artist"
I love the movies. When you have kids, going to a movie becomes a logistical battle kind of like the invasion on D-Day.
But once the kids are gone, going to the movies becomes a regular feature of social life. Afternoon, evening, it doesn't matter. I love the movies.
I also love some lousy movies. "Sister Act" is an all-time favorite, but it doesn't make any top 500 movie lists.
I always use the Oscars and Golden Globes and SAG awards shows as a guide to movies. Not foolproof, but it's a guide at least.
I cannot, however, bring myself to go see "The Artist."
Everyone I know who is cool loves it. I think I ought to love it. If I want to be part of the in crowd then "The Artist" ought to be high on my list.
But a silent movie with cheesy music and cheesier costumes just isn't luring me to part with the bucks for this movie. I've read a lot about it. I've seen trailers and clips. I've even talked to people who think I'm odd because I'm not enraptured. So far, nothing can convince me to go.
For some reason I think it's about an era of movie making I didn't live through and that I don't have any particular reverence for.
Anybody want to give it a try, feel free.

I'm so sad for you Dave. There is a whole big world out there which you should explore. I liked The Artist. But then I am also a big fan of the old musicals. The Artist reminded me a lot of Singing in the Rain. Similar story theme but without words. I was more impresses that a silent movie could get this kind of press. I guess the 3D, CG and FX producers are scratching their heads about this movie. I hope you take the time to see this movie. It is a breath of fresh air.

I can't lie. I read every Begel article just to see the comments skewer him. I commented long ago that Tarnoff actually writes these articles, and Begel is actually long dead and frozen in the onmilwaukee.com cellar.
Based on the talkback comments posted and their lack of useful arguements, I'll take Dave's advice, but only because it will make someone angry.

The Journal Sentinel just hired someone named David Paulsen to be its new Breaking News Editor. Paulsen comes to the paper after stints as a reporter in Wausau and Poughkeepsie, N. Y. and two years at Fox News. Well, when the announcement was made the cries from staffers in the newsroom in Downtown Milwaukee could be heard throughout the civilized world.

We boo because we care

Do something great and we adore our heroes with shouts, screams and applause. We care and we show we care. What are we to do when they screw something up? We care about them just as much and ignoring their failure should not be part of this equation. Not caring is worse, much worse, than disapproving. We have to let them know that we who depend on them so much are disappointed.
Etiquette: why stop at forks?

Enough young people have been convinced they should care about using the proper fork that a number of colleges and universities in Milwaukee have started holding etiquette classes for students headed out for job interview lunches and dinners. I see no reason, however, to limit this to meals. Think of all the opportunities these kids are missing.

Nobody is born a criminal. There is no inevitability to a kid becoming a criminal. There is something else at work here, and that leads us to the big question: Does crime cause poverty or does poverty cause crime?
Paying for fun is nothing new

Excitement, recreation and fun are good things and they are well worth paying for. Let's remove the science from this debate and just concentrate on the style of life and caliber of a city we all really want.
