The doggone legalization of wolf hunting
The last thing anyone should ever want to do is get involved with the Byzantine rule book of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
From hunting deer to fishing for bass to camping under trees, the DNR and its Natural Resources Board have a history of creating enough rules that you might mistake them for the Internal Revenue Service.
The latest set of rules, however, has raised the ire of humane societies and other organizations through the state who have filed a suit against the DNR.
It all stems from the fact that wolves are now no longer an endangered species. Once the federal government made that decision you could almost hear the salivating by hunters. A wolf on my wall? Holy cow!
The problem is that the DNR said it was OK to use dogs in the hunt for the wolf. There are all kinds of hairs to split about all of this, but basically the rules allow for unlimited use of dogs in hunting wolves.
The doomsday scenario drawn by the plaintiffs in this case is that there's this wolf somewhere in the woods and a couple of dogs track him down and find him and start barking. This kind of makes the wolf angry, and we all know what happens with an angry wolf.
This gives new meeting to the concept of dog fighting. Even Michael Vick might feel queasy about this. Can you imagine Rover and Buffy in battle with a wolf?
Like I said, I hate to get involved in DNR stuff, but on this one, it sure seems like the department ought to try and protect dogs. I mean if a couple of fewer wolves get killed, big deal. But if dogs get mauled by wolves, then we've got a major problem on our hands.

If dogs get mauled, how exactly does that become our problem? Sounds like a problem for the owner. Dogs get hurt all the time hunting boar down south if you're looking to pick a fight with more hunters.

I PROMISE you, no hunter is going to put a pack of 2500 dollar dogs, that he has spent countless hours and dollars training, not to mention loves like his own family, into that kind of danger.

You have got to be kidding me.. or, do you actually believe that they "sick" the dogs on the wolf and let them fight? The dogs track the game, in this case wolves, and then the hunter shoots it.

The Journal Sentinel just hired someone named David Paulsen to be its new Breaking News Editor. Paulsen comes to the paper after stints as a reporter in Wausau and Poughkeepsie, N. Y. and two years at Fox News. Well, when the announcement was made the cries from staffers in the newsroom in Downtown Milwaukee could be heard throughout the civilized world.

We boo because we care

Do something great and we adore our heroes with shouts, screams and applause. We care and we show we care. What are we to do when they screw something up? We care about them just as much and ignoring their failure should not be part of this equation. Not caring is worse, much worse, than disapproving. We have to let them know that we who depend on them so much are disappointed.
Etiquette: why stop at forks?

Enough young people have been convinced they should care about using the proper fork that a number of colleges and universities in Milwaukee have started holding etiquette classes for students headed out for job interview lunches and dinners. I see no reason, however, to limit this to meals. Think of all the opportunities these kids are missing.

Nobody is born a criminal. There is no inevitability to a kid becoming a criminal. There is something else at work here, and that leads us to the big question: Does crime cause poverty or does poverty cause crime?
Paying for fun is nothing new

Excitement, recreation and fun are good things and they are well worth paying for. Let's remove the science from this debate and just concentrate on the style of life and caliber of a city we all really want.
