The best party night of the year?
Forget the contrived, costumed craziness of Halloween.
Skip the forced, "we're all green" camaraderie of St. Patrick's Day.
New Year's Eve? That's strictly for amateurs.
If you ask me, to best night of the year to go out for a few friendly drinks with friends is ... drumroll, please ...
Tonight.
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving has a "homecoming" vibe about it. If you're in college, it's the first time to come home, see the folks and put the high school "band" back together.
Even if you've graduated, Thanksgiving Eve is the perfect night to gather at a familiar hometown watering hole and catch up with people you haven't seen in awhile. Almost nobody works on Thanksgiving. The entire holiday is built around eating and watching TV, both of which can be accomplished (if necessary) with a throbbing hangover.
If you aren't charged with cooking, cleaning, shopping or traveling, I recommend that you capitalize on this wonderful night (responsibly, of course) and offer for your consideration my list of favorite cocktail occasions on the calendar:
1. Thanksgiving Eve. (Reasons stated above).
2. The Sunday before Memorial Day. (It's when summer really takes hold.)
3. The Brewers' home opener. (Everybody in town plays hooky for that one.)
4. Any Badgers home football game.
5. The Sunday before Labor Day. (Especially if it coincides with opening week in the NFL.)
6. The opening hours of Summerfest. (It's great for 11 days, but the first few hours are precious.)
7. My birthday.
8. Your birthday.
9. St. Patrick's Day. (Espeically if it coincides during the NCAA Tournament.)
10. Halloween. (But only if I don't have to wear a costume.)

Whiskey Wednesday is a great bar night, but let's not get carried away...St. Pat's and New Year's Eve are by far and away better business nights for taverns. Yes they are amateur nights, but even people who normally do not indulge get carried away on these nights. Opening Day is another amateur day where people break laws and rules they would not do on any other day. The best night to go out.....Any night you can get a sitter! And the best 30+ bar with a dance floor...try a gay bar....really! Lot's of women, no competition, an occasional free drink, great music and dancing. Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving.

Tedddd Not really sure where the 30+ spots are. As I am only 22 in my heart and my actions. Not to mention I try and stay away from clubs. Try local bars around where you live that have an excellent Wednesday special. That is where you will find the people. I prefer the bar near my house that has a $10 AYCD special.

I perfer to get to the edge of a buzz the haul off to the family, where I can start getting that to a full on buzz. I can then sneak off and sleep it off after the dinner and blame it on friends visiting. That way you can also avoid "Aunt Gert's" revolving question of why you haven't found "the right person."

Destructo...guess I am not hitting the right spots. Where do I go for women and a good dance floor? For the 30+ crowd?

I have gone ever year on that night before Thanksgiving since turning 21....and I think it's actually cooled off in recent years, although the line @ Oakland Gyro's last year after bar close was insane. What hurts is bad weather - and it's supposed to snow. Whether it's more busy than say St Pat's Day or Halloween, I guess would have to ask some bar owners on that one.
