The week in local music: May 29, 2007

Welcome to the short work week, friends. Hope everyone had a fun, action-packed (or chill and relaxing, whichever you prefer) Memorial Day weekend. Brent and I have a solid local lineup for the first weekend in June so take a listen to the podcast to see what you could potentially be getting yourself into.

Broad Vocabulary, who just celebrated its second birthday as a feminist book store in Milwaukee, is hosting a benefit show on Friday, June 1 at Stonefly Brewing Co. Should you attend, you'll find The Barrettes, along with Testa Rosa and the Blissters out of Chicago. Here's a little rocker by The Barrettes called "Dogs out at 3" from the forthcoming EP.

Leo Minor, featuring J. Todd of Def harmonic Fame as well as ex-members of Temper Temper, is playing with Signaldrift at the Cactus Club on Friday, June 1. The band played live on WMSE a few weeks ago during the spring membership drive and we've got a sampling of that performance for your listening pleasure.

Clementine -- a prolific band with a plethora of new high-energy pop songs to share -- also played at the station during the membership drive and the song we've chosen for this podcast is among Brent's faves. There's no doubt the band will play it at Riverwest Commons on Saturday, June 2 during the show with Birds of Virginia.

Here on the Local Music Codpaste -- the official podcast name, for those who don't know -- we prefer to end things with a solid cover song, 'cause there's just about nothing more Milwaukeean than that. The Scarring Party does a lovely rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows," which, for the record, Brent would like to mention is better than Rufus Wainwright's version, in his opinion. You decide. You can catch the Scarring Party playing a 6 p.m. all-ages show at the Miramar on Saturday, June 2 with The Kissers, The 1900s, From the Headline and Samwell.

¡Viva the Milwaukee summer!
