This week's OnMilwaukee.com / WMSE Local Music Podcast sends you to all ends of the city -- and even up to Sheboygan -- to see some local bands do they what do best.

Friday night, Oct. 12, starts you out in Cudahy with a rare but exciting appearance by The Invaders at Vnuk's. The Milwaukee ska band shares the stage with Deals Gone Bad, a Chicago ska import. The Invaders made the cut for the last WMSE compliation CD, and Brent and I play the infectious "Invader Ska."

Milwaukee man Mike Mangione has a great new record out called "Tenebrae" and he's getting a fair amount of attention for it lately. You can watch him on Channel 4's "The Morning Blend" on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. and then catch him live at Linneman's Riverwest Inn on Saturday, Oct. 13. Don't miss OMC's interview with him in the music section on Saturday, as well.

Up for a fall drive? The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary in Sheboygan this weekend, and they've asked Paul Cebar and the Milwaukeeans  -- among several other bands -- to help ring in the bash. The band goes on at 9 p.m. as part of a five-hour 1960s themed festival. It'll set you back $19, or $16 if you're a member of the Arts Center. Check out jmkac.org for all the fun little details.

Julie Lawrence Special to OnMilwaukee.com

OnMilwaukee.com staff writer Julie Lawrence grew up in Wauwatosa and has lived her whole life in the Milwaukee area.

As any “word nerd” can attest, you never know when inspiration will strike, so from a very early age Julie has rarely been seen sans pen and little notebook. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it seemed only natural that she major in journalism. When OnMilwaukee.com offered her an avenue to combine her writing and the city she knows and loves in late 2004, she knew it was meant to be. Around the office, she answers to a plethora of nicknames, including “Lar,” (short for “Larry,” which is short for “Lawrence”) as well as the mysteriously-sourced “Bill Murray.”
