Work sucks, who wants a drink?

The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun articles on bars and clubs – including guides, the latest trends, bar reviews and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!
I believe I've mentioned that I'm somewhat of a workaholic, but one job or 10, we can all agree on one thing, sometimes work just sucks.
You know the feeling I'm talking about, the days where everything seems to be against you; your phone stops ringing as you trip over your headphone cord to answer it, you drop half your lunch in a garbage can filled with your coworker's chew spit, you're late for work because you didn't know it snowed, every time you try to print the machine is jammed or out of paper, and someone drank the last cup of coffee.
Days like that and you spend the whole day wanting to smash your over-worked head straight into your cubical that looks like you got the short straw in the company cube draw. I don't know if this is a national thing, Wisconsin thing, or maybe an immature 25-year-old thing, but usually those are the days I want to head straight to happy hour and wallow in my self pity.
For me, yesterday was one of those days.
Of course because we are on this whole "the universe hates me trend," yesterday was also one of the days I had to work after work, which means I missed all the good happy hour specials. Go figure. Who even decided happy hour typically runs till 6 p.m.?
When I got to my second job the day ceased to improve. Dropped silverware right after it was washed, spilled sauce on my shirt, and knocked over chairs in the dining room at the exact moment the jukebox shut off. Clearly this was not my day.
Finally my shift was over, but instead of heading home I decided to try my luck one more time and see if a few cocktails could at least bring me out of my foul mood and cloud of self-loathing.
Hello Hotel Foster and all your hipster glory.
I chose this not so-on-the-way home establishment because I wanted a bit of consistency. One of my coworkers from Palomino happened to be working and I knew, if nothing else, I could at least count on her ability to make a drink. When I arrived, Lauren immediately made me a Gin Bramble, one of my favorites. I'm not exactly sure about the origin of the sweet gin infused elixir, but it's a hit every time. Somewhat sweet, yet somewhat sour, it really can't be beat.
To ensure that my late night happy hour was a success, I wrangled up two friends to join me. Neither had ever been to Hotel Foster and both were quite impressed with not only the flashy drink list, but also the extensive beer selection. A few standard classic drinks are even listed directly on the coasters (helpful when scrambling to figure out a decent drink order).
We all passed on the Old Milwaukee drink special in favor of a few higher-end cocktails. By round two, everyone was getting frisky with the craft cocktails, going as far as to ask the bartenders to "invent" new drinks. After pulling together an impressive something, one of my gleeful partners exclaimed, "he's an alchemist, no wait, a mixologist!" I promptly gave him a scathing look and wrist slap.
A few more friends arrived; while the bar wasn't packed it was busy enough for us to feel like we weren't the lifeblood of the place
The evening proved to be exactly what I needed – a simple way to wind down after a botched day at work. Cheers to hoping tomorrow doesn't involve falling, slipping or crashing into anything.

MKE 2 SXSW
Published March 21, 2013
About a month ago a friend asked me to come down and visit her in Austin for South by Southwest. At first I thought she was crazy, but decided it was a brilliant idea. Of course, being so close to the actual event, I couldn't find tickets for less than $700.
Don't call it "amateur night"
Published Jan. 2, 2013
The older I get, the more I seem to hear people refer to New Year's Eve as "amateur night." I'm not offended by this, but I'm perplexed and concerned about the lack of a celebratory spirit.
Friday fish, fun and fantastic Southern rock
Published Dec. 3, 2012
For me, a normal weekend usually consists of hustling about my part-time jobs, maybe getting a work out in, and spending some time with friends. Weekends are when those of us in service industry jobs tend to have our busiest nights, so typically I'd rather pick-up rather than lose a shift. However, last Friday I was off from work, free to roam, with plans to see Alabama Shakes at the Riverside.Â
Cold beer running
Published Nov. 6, 2012
If you'd asked me a year ago what the first thought that popped into my head when someone mentioned "beer run," my response would definitely not be 13.1 miles. However, today that's my only thought. Over the weekend, I accomplished a fitness goal I never dreamed imaginable or ever really had in mind as an obtainable goal.
The adultlike birthday party
Published Sept. 15, 2012
I always know it's going to be a good night when I get every single thing on my to-do list done before heading out for the evening. This was the case when 7:30 p.m. rolled around and it was time to start the birthday celebrations for a friend of mine. I gave myself a big pat on the back and flew out the door just in time to make it to an 8 p.m. reservation at Odd Duck, 2352 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.Â
A Fish Day frolic
Published July 25, 2012
If you haven't heard of this festival, well frankly, you should educate yourself. Fish Day takes place in beautiful Port Washington. It is billed as the world's largest one day outdoor fish fry. Contrary to popular belief, the festival does last only one day (although there are many who start early and finish late). I personally have attended this fishy fest on a regular basis for as long as I can remember. Then again, I also grew up in good ol' P Dub.
Easing back into the Big Gig
Published July 2, 2012
Everyone has a favorite holiday. For some it's Christmas, others Thanksgiving, but for me it's that summery time of year in Milwaukee. You guessed it, Summerfest. All right, maybe I'm a little too excited about all this and yes, I know it's not actually a holiday, but then again, maybe you're just not excited enough.
Tuesday boozeday
Published June 20, 2012
I'm not sure why, but Tuesday was feeling a bit too much like Friday. That or maybe I just live life like it's spring break (so I've been told). Either way, Tuesday evening worked out as my only night off this week and I was more than ready for an adult beverage. This particular Tuesday happened to be a bit special as my brother was in town for a few days before an 11-month deployment.Â
