World Cup recap: Day 4
Denmark Center Back Daniel Agger has a tattoo of a Viking on his upper right arm with the quote "Memento mori," which means "remember, you will die." Agger delivered the kiss of death to his Danish side Monday scoring an own goal for the Netherlands as the Dutch cruised to a 2-0 victory.
Agger and his uncle own a pub in Denmark which undoubtedly was the most somber soccer bar on the planet today.
Dirk Kuyt, Agger's Liverpool teammate scored the second goal for Holland today. Kuyt, playing for one of the English Premier League's "Big Four" is famous around the globe where most every soccer fan knows his last name is pronounced "Kout."
This fact eluded ESPN's Mike Tirico who is apparently more comfortable talking about the 18th green than he is the 18-yard-line. Tirico referred to him as "Koyt" when recapping the game's highlights.
ESPN play-by-play announcer Ian Dark, who has great command of player names, delivered the best line of the day before the Italy / Paraguay match.
Dark, wishing that Paraguay wouldn't sit back on defense the entire game against the favored Italians said, "I hope Paraguay doesn't pull a Uruguay today." Uruguay kept 11 men behind the ball from start to finish in Friday's goalless draw with France.
The rain-soaked, 45-degree-chilled fans in Cape Town still found the energy to do "the wave" today. They probably could have used a Camp Randall rendition of "Jump Around" to stay warm. It's nearly winter in South Africa but FIFA still decided to hold the World Cup there. Maybe playing the 2014 Super Bowl at the new Meadowlands stadium isn't such a crazy idea after all.
Agger and English goalie Robert Green have been the most notable players in the competition thus far. Here's hoping that heroes supplant bumblers as the headline-makers as the World Cup moves forward.Â
