Are today’s school closings a good call or a major inconvenience?
Milwaukee Public Schools canceled classes today. The district made the call at 5:30 a.m. because, at the time, it was snowing, dozens of accidents had been reported and an ice storm warning was in effect until 3 p.m. today. The ice storm, however, has not yet hit the area.
Was this a good or bad decision? Are the conditions bad enough to warrant school closings? Surely, thousands of Milwaukee parents are left without child care and unable to work today. Or, is this a smart, proactive safety measure? Perhaps the bottom line is this: Would you want your child riding a bus to school today?

I think it was a great idea for mps to close today; I'd rather my KIDS be at home safe and I go out to work in these conditions. the less traffic the better.

well...maybe it was more of an issue of getting the kids home. I mean we drove to the barn, but then again, we're a little tad bit crazy. also, at three, it was snowing really hard, and it was wet. So snowy, in fact, that my fuzzy horse got soaked through to the skin and got very cold.

Zappa- I think your comment was based on a stereotype of youth and americans in general. The kids I know were playing outside, we rode our horses in the snow, went sledding, then went sledding at the barn.....need I say more?

I think the majority of schools had it right and the workaholic adults had it wrong. Everyone should have stayed home and let the plows do their jobs. Perhaps then the dozens of accidents that occurred on the highways and streets would not have happened.
And I remember having at least one snow day every year growing up, and multiple "cold" days when the wind chills were in the -40 to -50 ranges. It's not being "soft" it's being smart.

Come on - this society is nuts! It is dangerous out there - these schools were absolutely right to make the call based on the reports and safety. We all think we are invincible and "can get there" - yeah, we can, but SHOULD we? Maybe we should all think twice before wandering out. And having kids is a responsibility - yeah, sometimes you have to miss work or make arrangements - it is really that much of a hardship??
