September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the Delafield-based G9 is poised to present more important work. G9 stands for "Gold in September," combining the national color for pediatric cancer and the month of September.

G9 is a childhood cancer non-profit dedicated to increasing funding for childhood cancer research and initiatives by growing awareness that inspires action to help "every child, everywhere."

The concept for the G9 was created by a then-11-year-old girl from Hartland named Annie Bartosz whose twin brother was battling cancer. Annie saw the nation turn pink in October for Breast Cancer and became determined to turn the world "Gold In September" for kids battling cancer.

"You can’t win the fight against this awful disease with just the people who are trying to fight it, that’s like trying to win a war with only the wounded," says Annie, who is now 14.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, "The G9 Golden Celebration" will celebrate and recognize the leaders, locally and nationally, coming together to change the future of childhood cancer. The event will take place at The Grain Exchange, 225 E. Michigan St.

The event will include James Beard Foundation Award-winning chefs, the first-ever G9 Excellence Award and co-chairs Elizabeth Brenner, Steve Ostrofsky, Barri and Dave Drury, and Tricia and John Shinners.

Childhood cancer is an urgent health crisis – it is the number one disease killer of kids in the United States – and through global research, strategic partners and an altruistic and innovative approach, G9 works to be a catalyst for change.

G9 directly funds "Early Phase Trials," which bring new and promising treatments to kids faster. The organization also provides funding for global research, fundraising programs, effective marketing, family support services and more.
