This year, the process to apply for a coveted spot in the Riverwest 24 will change. The RW24 is a 24-hour bike race that takes place every summer, this year it’s on July 29-30, and people come to ride individually or on teams from all over the country.

However, everyone must sign up in person on May 1 at the Riverwest Public House Cooperative, 815 E. Locust St.

The event is limited to about 1,000 riders (500 of which are volunteers and automatically have a spot) and because it has gotten so popular in past years, people started showing up days – yes, days – in advance to camp out and get in line for a spot.

According to co-organizer Steve Whitlow, he and other volunteers will hand out about 2,000 "raffle" tickets for the 500 remaining open spots from 10 a.m. to noon at the Public House.

"We’ll start pulling winners around 12:30 p.m.," says Whitlow.

The winners will then get in line for the registration process, and are guaranteed a spot in the race.

"We want to make the registration process more equitable," says Whitlow. "Not everyone can take three days off to day drink and stand in line."
