Recently, Bobby Tanzilo reported that Mathias Simonis won the $15,000 first-place prize at the Nightclub & Bar Show Convention's "Shake It Up! 2011: Creative Cocktail Challenge" in Las Vegas.

Last weekend, Simonis nabbed the top prize in the Portland-based Herradura Tequila Competition at the North Meets South Food and Drink Jubilee.

Simonis, who pours at Distil, 722 N. Milwaukee St., beat out four other bartenders and will journey to Jalisco, Mexico, in November to spend a week at the distillery learning about tequila.

"On a roll with more to come soon," he says.

Go, Mathias!
