Cafe La Paloma, 606 S. 5th St., reopened this weekend as Tabu, a Latin-themed dance club and restaurant.
Cafe La Paloma was originally owned and operated by Jose Chavez, who extended the business to Sandy Rivas this summer. Rivas and her husband operated the space as Cafe La Paloma for a couple of months, but it did not take off.
"There’s a lot of competition in the neighborhood," says Rivas.
Tabu is currently open on Fridays and Saturday and features a DJ playing primarily Latin music.
"We decided to try something different," says Rivas.
The space has been completely redecorated with the brightly colored walls now black and white. There is also more lighting and a VIP lounge in the lower level.
Within a week or two, Rivas plans to reopen the restaurant as a dinner destination and for now is serving appetizers during club hours.
Prior to Cafe La Paloma, the space was a club, Texture.
