Goldilocks and the Three Bars: There Will Be Bloodies

The story of Goldilocks is pretty well known. A little blond girl breaks into a house owned by a family of anthropomorphic bears and proceeds to jack up their chairs, porridge and beds while they're out doing, I don't know, bear stuff. But what if, instead of being a cute little fairy tale girl with no respect for property, Goldilocks had some sense and happened to be just a little bit of a lush? Well, that'd be me.

I've decided to explore every bar, pub, lounge and dive Milwaukee has to offer – in sets of three, just to be cute. Check back often as I embark on regular bar tours with my self-proclaimed "magical sidekick," Jessie. And don't worry – I'm too much of a taste chameleon to ever find one that's "just right."

It's Halloween weekend, so it seems only fitting we'd scare up a little something different for you this week.

I'm sure most of you remember the urban legend about Bloody Mary. Some versions use a mirror and others use a dark closet, but the story goes that if you say "Bloody Mary" three times, she'll appear to steal your soul, or gouge your eyes out, or some other supernaturally induced inconvenience.

Personally, I like drinkable spirits much better. The worst thing that happens to you if you order three Bloody Marys at a bar is you end up having to part with a few extra dollars than if you had gone with a run-of-the-mill cocktail or beer. But with all the goodies that get added on and a beer chaser to boot, you get your money's worth.

Plus, when you add in the fact that it won't cost your immortal soul, it's a downright bargain.

The add-ons: bacon, green olive, Brussels sprout, mushroom cap

The Bloody: Comet's Bloody Mary is made signature by the ever-present and generous serving of bacon that tops it off, but the drink itself has its own unique taste thanks to a splash of Guinness mixed in. It gives the Bloody an interesting and almost smoky kind of taste that works well with the bacon.

Do you let kids just make off with your trick-or-treat candy or do you give them a scare to go with it?
Do you let kids just make off with your trick-or-treat candy or do you give them a scare to go with it?

Does anyone still put the "trick" in "trick or treat?"

I have a lot of cute memories of my early trick-or-treating years. My awesome pumpkin bucket. Getting mad that I had to wear a jacket over my costume. Bartering with my little brother for the good candy when we got our hauls home. You know, normal kid stuff.

Of course, childhood memories wouldn't be complete without a couple traumatic incidents thrown in, and this naturally applies to Halloween.

I can still remember that fateful day. I think I was still relatively new at the whole trick-or-treat business because I recall getting mildly confused when no one greeted me at the front door. There was candy, though, in a bowl by the scarecrow sitting on the porch. (I think you know where this is going.) The unsuspecting little witch-costumed sap that was my child self reached out for a piece of candy and got the living crap scared out of her by an incognito neighbor with a twisted sense of humor.

In retrospect, I give major credit to the guy for sitting perfectly still for practically three hours just to scare some hapless little candy beggars. That's dedication. And frankly, it's pretty hilarious. It got me wondering, though, if anyone still regards "trick or treat" as a dare and not just a stand-in for "give me candy."

Do you know a house that doles out a little bit of a scare before letting the costumed kiddos make off with their reward? Is this the kind of thing you pull? Let me know. I'd like to rest assured that the trick is alive and well. And no, I don't mean sending kids on their not-so-merry way with toothbrushes or pre-packaged coloring kits. That's just cruel.

Goldilocks and the Three Bars: A Taste of Tosa

I'm a big fan of Wauwatosa. Its boutiques and restaurants are a quaint escape from Milwaukee, but not as small town-y as downtown Greendale or Cedarburg.

It's also a pretty convenient place if you're looking for a little drinking diversity, too. You can have a classy night out without spending an entire paycheck, hit up a friendly neighborhood spot or even tap into a little Water Street-style fun – without, you know, sidestepping puddles of someone's revisited dinner.

Walter's on North, 6930 W. North Ave.

A lot of people only think of the downtown village when they think of Tosa, and generally bring the East Side to mind when someone says North Avenue. But the west end of this road hosts its own share of unique spots, and Walter's is one of them.

Walter's on North has occupied the corner of 70th and North for over 40 years, and it's definitely part of the neighborhood. The old-school bar has amassed a good amount of regulars with its friendly staff and varied selection of bar food and dinner fare.

The bar itself is an interesting mix of modern and retro. Its polished, angular counter wraps around the main room and frames the bar and open grill, giving you a perfect position for watching the game on one of the televisions (or watching them …

Goldilocks and the Three Bars: The Bluemound Brew Crew

Last week found the intrepid Goldilocks duo in a tapas bar for the Brewers game. While I consider any place with a good selection of alcohol and a television an acceptable viewing space, this week we decided to go in search of a more appropriate setting.

Naturally, this meant a mini-bar crawl along Bluemound Road, where the beer and Brewers games flow freely in mere walking distance of Miller Park. There are no shortage of watering holes along this stretch, but for the sake of the blog (and my budget) I'm sticking to three. So don't get all uppity if I didn't pick your personal favorite – with Bluemound's level of bar saturation it's likely due for another series.

McGinn's, 5901 W. Bluemound Road

The pioneers of the Miller Park shuttle, McGinn's is more than their Slim-ousine. The bar still packs it in for away games.

McGinn's regular crowd is a slightly older set, but the bar's atmosphere is welcoming and open to anyone. Small and large groups can stop in to root for the home team while watching one of the many big screen TVs. The team of choice is the Brewers, which is obvious from the décor (which includes an insane collection of Brewer bobbleheads above the bar), but crowds are common during Packers season, too.

Larger groups can take…
