Beware Splitting Charges at Samurai

Back in June a group of 7 of us went for dinner at Samurai in Mequon. We've always liked this place for their Teppanyaki and had a good time. When the bill came, we asked if we could charge some different amounts to different cards and they said no problem. I signed my receipt for $53 and we left.

Fast foward a few weeks and I was (thankfully) checking my credit card statement and saw that I was billed $155 for dinner at Samurai! To make a long story short(er), my visa company wouldn't take off the charge because I agreed I spent money there so it wasn't really fraud, and so I spent many, many phone calls trying to get Samurai to pull the receipts for me.

Finally, in late July, a gentleman from Samurai called and said that he found the receipts for that night and there had indeed been a mistake. The entire charges were charged to me instead of just the $53. One would think all would be fixed, right? Wrong. Samurai refuses to credit my visa until they can get the other credit card numbers to re-charge the others. My issues with this are 1) It's not my responsibility to fix their errors and 2) My dining companions are weary of giving me (or the restaurant) their credit card numbers, especially after what happened to me. It's not like they are 'best friends' that I see all the time either.

After talking with a great rep. at visa, they have requested those receipts from Samurai, and although it may take a few months, I'm hopeful that they'll get it sorted. Also, as I run into the people I went to dinner with that night, I'm asking if they'll give me the cash for their portion, in case this doesn't get sorted. Visa agrees it's not up to me to help Samurai correct their mis-charge. They just owe me what I didn't agree to pay. At the end of the day, Samurai has lost business from 7 people because none of us will ever go back there again.

Since I'm not American I don't think it's a reflection on the USA that I've done this in many places. Having lived in Europe, this is quite common. The bottom line is that it's a signed contract between the restaurant and I for a certain charge, and they did not live up to that contract. Lame or not, they broke the agreement.

You have done this all over the world? No wonder other countries hate Americans so much. Still lame.

It was just split 3 ways (not 7), and they had no problem at all doing it when we asked. If they were super-busy or had seemed unwilling we would have just put it on one card. All over the world people are willing to do this and don't necessarily expect cash and in my many years have dining have never had a problem.
