Tuesday January 2nd, 2007 - Calgary, AB

Another day in comedy boot camp. I’m still infected with the contagious infestation that has been ravaging my innards and am coughing and wheezing relentlessly but that didn’t stop me from getting out and enjoying the day a little. The weather was gorgeous and I’m starting to believe in all that global warming ying yang I keep hearing about. It was great.

Even the people in town seem to think something is changing. There was about three or four inches of snow on the ground when I got here but most of it melted today. It was just perfect and sunny and I took a nice long walk even longer than the one I took yesterday. I walked at night yesterday but today it was sunny and beautiful and I really broke a sweat.

The key to exercising is to do it regularly. That’s not easy, or everyone would do it. I’m really glad I’m up here for this week because there really isn’t much else to do except that and sit at my computer and work hour after hour. Taking a nice walk is a welcome break.

I stopped at the grocery store I got locked out of yesterday and actually bought myself a bag of healthy things to eat. Who is this man and what has he done with my former self? I would have LOVED to treat myself to all kinds of things that are bad for me but I didn’t.

Part of what has helped is that there have been a lot of things on TV the last few days to fill my head with good thoughts. Not only did I watch the ‘Super Size Me’ movie, there is a British TV show that has a woman nutritionist who drills it into people how much harm what they eat is doing to their body. She is a real nut buster and I was watching her get in the face of people. I think it would be great to have that show in America too but whether or not it ever gets there I was able to see it up here. It really hit home on the diet front and I remembered it the whole time I was shopping. I wanted to buy my favorites but I didn’t.

According to her THE number one worst thing anyone can put in their body is what she called ‘fizzy drinks’. Either regular or diet sodas are both supposedly horrible in different ways. That’s a killer for me because that’s what I really love. I don’t drink or smoke or do drugs or have a severe sweet tooth other than I really love sodas. I love the bubbles and it doesn’t matter to me if it’s diet or not. According to her that’s the worst thing for anyone.

Here I am all alone in a foreign country with nothing else to do but sit and try not to get so bored I hang myself in my room and I learn the one thing I really love is bad for me. It doesn’t help much that there is a Coke machine right outside my hotel room door either. I didn’t buy any at the store though and I haven’t had one in several days now. I hate that.

But this is a good challenge and I accepted it when I took the booking. I’ll be ok and if I slip and have a soda it’s not going to end my life…today. I know it’s not good for me and I have begun to cut back a lot so that’s good. I also have been exercising and eating some healthy foods and not too much either. I’m not getting cocky though, it’s only January 2nd.

I am starting the year off right though, and I know I’m ahead of a lot of other people who haven’t recovered from their New Year’s Eve hangovers yet. Two days down, 363 to go.
