Hit Me Baby One More Time
I won't lie; the main part of my decision to go to the Britney Spears concert was that Nicki Minaj was her opener. I love Nicki Minaj - she's just crazy enough to be great (without being too crazy). That being said, I should also say that my biggest Summerfest disappointment this year was my fault: I missed seeing Nicki Minaj.
Traffic gave my concert-going friend and myself a late to start arriving to Summerfest, pre-concert food and drinks delayed us even more and by the time we made it into the Amphitheater, what we thought was the perfect time to catch the majority of Nicki's act had already dissolved into the big Britney clock counting down when she would take the stage. That aside, you can't say no to the former pop princess.
Britney Spears took an entire day to recover from. Once the concert began, I fully embraced my guilty pleasure of loving most of her hits. I spend the time dancing on the bleachers (clumsily) and singing along to her songs (badly). Despite the fact that I spent most of my childhood denouncing pop acts in name of more creditable bands - Depeche Mode and The Cure to name a few - I've finally accepted all of my guilty pleasures and can now enjoy them fully. And let's be honest, it's hard for anyone to avoid getting infected by the pop bug.
Say what you will about the girl, her singing (or lack thereof), or the questionable events in her life, but post K*Fed, kids and crazy, Britney Spears can still put on a good show. Even if you have no investment in her music, watching her dance in a variety of crazy outfits was still a pretty great way to spend my weekend. Years after she came on the scene with "Hit Me Baby One More Time," Britney can still put on a good show and get people dancing.
And I should know: my feet just stopped throbbing yesterday. Thanks Britney, and thanks Summerfest; here's to next year.
