The Wave - indoor soccer's version of the Packers and still undefeated!!!
The Wave came into Saturday's tilt with the Lancers as the only undefeated team in the MISL and looked to take care of yet another expansion franchise. The Lancers had a different idea though as they jumped out with the quickest goal I've ever seen in my two years as a season ticket holder. Taking the opening kickoff the Lancers bombed the ball into the corner and scored off a shot five seconds into the game. Nick Vorberg, the Wave's goalie for the game, looked shocked as did all of his teammates. Two more quick goals from the Lancers gave them a 7-0 lead and silenced the announced crowd of 3,200 fans. Much like last year's Packers playoff game against Altlanta though, the lead they spotted the expansion Lancers would seem like a distant memory as the game played out. Like the true champions they are they didn't panic and proceeded to put up 11 points in the last 7 minutes of the first quarter to take an 11-7 lead.
Five minutes into the 2nd quarter of the game the Lancers scored to bring the game back within reach at 11-9, but that would end up being the last time they scored in route to a Wave 24-9 blowout victory. Another dominating effort by the defending champs despite their slow start. Much like the Packers it wasn't one player dominating as nine different players tallied goals with only team captain Howes and defender Hammes scoring a pair each. When you throw in Perera's assist there were ten players who tallied points in the victory with Hammes the point leader for the Wave with 7 off of a three point goal, a two point goal and two assists. Through the Wave's 6 games 17 players on the 20 man roster have scored with the three remaining players being goalies Feenstra and Vorgerg and the teams leading scorer and MVP candidate from last year Marco Terminesi who's close to returning from offseason surgery.
Much like the Pack the Wave continue to ride their impressive offense that leads the league in scoring averaging 18 points a game while outscoring their opposition by 7 1/2 points a game. Also like the Pack a lot of their opponent's points have been scored in the 4th quarter when the game is already out of reach. While they have yet to meet their biggest competition and the team they defeated for the championship last year, the Baltimore Blast, they have them on the schedule on Saturday December 31st at the Cell. It will be the biggest test on their schedule to date but there's no reason to believe the Wave won't take care of business as the Blast have already dropped three games this season despite leading the East.
This Friday the Wave will try to push their perfect record to 7-0 and add to their 10 game home winning streak which includes last year's playoffs when they take on the Wings at 7pm at the Cell. The team is offering a great deal with buy one get one free ticket deals in the $16 sections but you can upgrade to better seats from there. Come on down to win prizes in the parachute drop, bid on a game worn jersey with the proceeds going to one of the communities best charities Children's Hospital, get fired up by house announcer Van 'The Man' McNeil, win a souvenir ball that the players kick into the crowd after scoring a goal, win a t-shirt in the t-shirt toss at halftime and cheer on your hometown undefeated Wave to another victory in their drive for back to back championships!!! There's no good reason not to be there, so come on down and help me cheer them on!!!
