Third time's the charm, at least for Milwaukee-born and bred author Stuart Rojstaczer. Rojstaczer's third stab at writing a novel has been his most successful and the publication of "The Mathematician's Shiva," out now in paperback from Penguin, brings the Brew City boy home for a reading and signing next week at Boswell Books.

After a night of storms Summerfest was warm and dry for kids day on Tuesday. Admission was free until 3 p.m. and big crowds were on hand to enjoy the Big Gig.

When it comes to schools, communities often know best. Maybe not always, but often. And it looks like in the case of Eighty-First Street School - in the Cooper Park neighborhood on the city's West Side - that's the case. In the first year of the roll out of a new personalized learning curriculum at the school that was merged with nearby 68th Street School two years ago, progress is already being seen.

Basically, what was up for a vote at a school board meeting last week was exactly what MTEA wanted - a process that empowered community voice over administrative fiat - and MTEA beat it back, and called it a win. After the meeting, MTEA said, "now we can start the community process at our schools," which, you know, is exactly what they would have been doing had the vote gone the other way, too. And with district funding, personnel and support for the process, which now we don't have.

It was welcome news to community organizers when MPS recently assigned director of school administration Anita Pietrykowski to take over discussions about the future of 68th Street School's early childhood program and a community proposal to merge the program into nearby 81st Street School.
